LA VERNIA -- They made the playoffs after a 6-4 run through district play, but after falling to Fredericksburg last Tuesday by the score of 69-41, the La Vernia Bear basketball team has been eliminated from the postseason.

The Bears traveled to Boerne Feb. 19 to play the Fredericksburg Billies in a bi-district matchup. Things started off quickly, and Fredericksburg jumped out to an 18-11 lead after the first eight minutes of play. Things slowed down slightly in the second period, though the Billies continued to outscore the Bears and took a comfortable 34-20 advantage into the break.

The lead didn’t appear to be enough for Fredericksburg, however, and the Billies came out scoring in the third, adding another 18 points to the board. La Vernia, meanwhile, was held to just 4 points in the third period and trailed Fredericksburg 52-24 by the end of the period. The Bears came back in the final period to score 17 points, but the Billies tacked on another 16 and easily won by the final score of 68-41.

The team will be hit particularly hard by graduation this spring, but will have a couple of talented juniors back, including Colby Sims and Austin Pickens. It will be a different team during the 2013-14 season, but the Bears generally find success, and there is no reason to believe it will be any different next year.
