On the heels of the conclusion of the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, volunteers continue to prepare the La Vernia Chamber of Commerce grounds for the 56th La Vernia Junior Livestock and Poultry Show. The show, sponsored by the La Vernia Chamber of Commerce, will begin Thursday, Feb. 28, and conclude Saturday, March 2, on the chamber grounds, located at 12301 U.S. 87 in La Vernia.

Youth are the future of our world, and it’s the chamber’s endeavor to assist them in being able to complete their 4-H and FFA projects by securing funds through the auction sale that will help them achieve their dream of college or technical school, advancing the education for our next generation of workers.

Baked foods, art

The baked foods show and arts and crafts judging will take place Friday, March 1, with an auction Friday at 4 p.m. in the show arena. Food show entries will be accepted from 9-10:30 a.m., with the judging of the arts and crafts to take place at 10:30 a.m. The baked foods show judging begins at 11 a.m.

This year, 66 juniors and 52 seniors have signed up to enter either in the iced or un-iced cakes, drop or bar cookies, pies, and yeast or quick breads.

Food booths, refreshments, exhibits, and arts and crafts booths will be available throughout the show.

A silent auction also will be held, with proceeds to benefit senior scholarships.

Charity Schroeder is serving as hall manager for booth rental. For more information, call 830-534-9241 or Sarah Young at 210-259-9886.

Livestock, poultry

Once again, the livestock show will begin with the rabbit judging Thursday at 7 p.m. This year 45 rabbits, 37 single fryer rabbits, and 10 breeder rabbits will be judged.

The show continues Friday, with the poultry judging at 8 a.m. Exhibitors have signed up 36 broilers and 42 turkeys in this year’s show.

Lamb and goat judging is set for 10 a.m. with 18 lambs, 29 goats, two breeder sheep, and nine breeder goats entered.

Steers will take center stage at 2 p.m., with the swine judging concluding Friday’s activities at 6 p.m. According to organizers, 19 steers, 13 heifers, 124 swine, and 22 gilts will compete that afternoon.

The livestock and poultry exhibitors will have their auction on Saturday at noon in the sale arena.

Buyers’ pool

There will be no barbecue meal this year on Saturday, but the hospitality building will be open for auction buyers with sandwiches, snacks, and refreshments starting at 10 a.m. A meet-and-greet with signup of buyers will be held starting at this time with auction sheets and add-ons forms available. The buyers’ pool also will be accepting donations for the 2013 show.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to the buyers’ pool may visit the booth set up at the show or send their contribution to La Vernia Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 152, La Vernia, TX 78121, and specify Buyers’ Pool. The Buyers’ Pool Committee tries to ensure that bids are kept up and going. Some lower prices are adjusted following the auction to assist toward a fair amount for all La Vernia Show exhibitors. All donations are appreciated, with 100 percent of the donation applied to the auction winners. Your support and commitment to the youth of today secures better leadership for tomorrow’s future.

To conclude the festivities, dance to the music of “Clint Taft & Buck Wild Band” from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. The dance is open to the public.
