Border security not up to speed

AUSTIN -- Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples today issued the following statement:

The mere fact that 98,000 individuals have been apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol during fiscal year 2012 in the Rio Grande Valley sector alone, and that a majority are not from Mexico, is a powerful indicator the border is far from secure.

Our officers are doing the best job they can with the resources they have, but if ‘our borders have, in fact, never been stronger’ why has the Chicago Crime Commission, just this past Feb. 14, named a drug cartel kingpin Public Enemy Number One?

This GAO report is a 66 page document and I look forward to reviewing the contents, but the study clearly states the best available data cannot be used to make conclusive insights regarding spillover crime.

The best data available I have seen are real testimonies from Texas farmers and ranchers who say they are being chased off their land and threatened by violent drug cartel members. Until Washington steps up and provides the resources needed to secure the border, Texans are in danger.
