Marion, TX.,(March, 2nd 2013) San Antonio Raceway officially kicked off its 2013 points season with the first of the Summit Super Series specials. Driver in Electronics, No-box and Jr. Dragster, were scheduled to, compete on the 1Ž4 mile this weekend. Also included was a ‘Quick 8’ race for those looking to shoot for some extra bucks.

Other than some wind, it was a pleasant day with temperatures in the 60’s, and the track surface showing around 100 as time trials kicked off. Round number 1 of No-box was quickly slowed when Chuck Van Buren dumped synthetic oil out of his Mustang starting about 60’ on out.

After a second oil down in the other lane the oil absorb dust blowing in the wind began creating problems. After a lot of work, and reducing the race to the eighth mile, the show continued with track temps down to the 70’s.

Following the racing action, San Antonio Raceway hosted its annual Racers Banquet handing out the winners hardware to Electronics winner, Michael Keylich, Foot-brake champ, Cole Herbold, Jr. Dragster titlist, Chris Pearson along with Allen Nelson(Trucks) and Ruben Gallegos(Motorcycle).

Pair of Penningtons Pick Up Electronics Paydays
With three of the Pennington family in the semi’s it was a guarantee that two would land in the Electronics finals. Preston Pennington(Three Rivers) bested Aaron Cole in one semi, while Michael Pennington(Seguin) took out his wife, Cassie, in the other. The finals would have pitted Michael’s 34 Ford Roadster against Preston’s Dragster, but with a big race coming up they opted to save equipment and split the pot.

Preston, who lost in round 1, got back in and knocked out former track/national champ, Scott Ball, R. Hinton, and David Johns before his semi-final meeting with Cole. Michael ousted J. Talley, J. Wilson, G. Sanchez and Brett Zampese ahead of the win against his spouse.
Cassie Pennington(Seguin) made up for her loss in the semi-finals taking the victory in the “Quick 8”. Cassie’s 2008 TNT Dragster bested Brett Zampese in a close finish.

C. Pennington got wins over Mike Zampese and Greg Meuth with B. Zampese getting around R. Hinton and David Johns.

Inman Inches Out Win in No-box
San Antonio’s Jimmy Inman used consistent 7.20’s, and lived a charmed racing life after the change to eighth mile to work his way to finals in his Lethal Performance, Nagolitos Gear, Porky’s sponsored 98 Camaro. Motorcycle champion, Ruben Gallegos(Schertz) ran his 5.80’s through on his Suzuki Hayabusa. Gallegos had a .007 light as he tried to run down Inman, but broke out on the top end. Inman would have been tough to beat running a 7.236 on a 7.23 dial.

Jimmy Inman, 7.236 @ 96.17 defeats Ruben Gallegos, 5.816 @ 114.12

Inman got red light win over S. Zemgals, then took him again on a break out, with another break out victory over D. Schneider. Aaron Tschoepe went red against Inman in round 4 before Inman took a hole shot win againstDave Patton ahead of a bye in the semi’s.

J. Korancek broke out against R. Gallegos in round 1, who got a red light win on H. Shimek and then bested Dennis Soefje. Josh Gaspard broke out in round 4 advancing R. Gallegos to a bye before facing, and beating, defending champ, Cole Herbold in the semi-finals.

Hillin Hustles to Jr. Dragster Honors
Kenneth Hillin(San Antonio) used a near perfect number to take down Emily Ball(San Antonio) in the Jr. Dragster finals, their second meeting of the night. Hillin laid down an 8.906 on an 8.90 dial while Ball gave up 5/100th.

Kenneth Hillin, 8.806 @ 74.53 defeats Emily Ball, 9.168 @ 70.12

Oddly enough Ball beat Hillin in round 1, who then used a rebuy to get wins over Kristin Velasquez and Gianni Carrola. Ball got past former champ Ashley Hubbell and Caden Meuth.

Besides its regular weekly events, the track specials for the month of March include another Summit Super Series event on March 16, Alamo City Jr. Dragster Finals March 23-24 and a unique, heads up, street car event featuring an arm drop start.

Coming in April is the IHRA Nitro Jam with Top Fuel Dragsters, Prostalgia Nitro Funny Cars, Fuel Altereds and Nitro Harleys, aswell as wheel standers and jet trucks(April 5-6). The Summit Pro-Am Sportsman series runs three days during the same weekend(April 5-7)
