Fernando R. Gonzales, a lifelong resident of Poth, passed away Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at 5:25 p.m. in his daughter’s residence in Poth at the age of 98 years, 7 months, and 6 days. Fernando was born July 18, 1914, in Poth, Texas, the son of Pedro and Sarita Ramirez Gonzales.

He attended Poth Grammar School, and worked for the Wilson County commissioner for 20 years, before retiring in 1979. Fernando married Maria deHoyos on June 19, 1937, in Poth. Maria, Fernando’s beloved wife of 71 years, preceded him in death on July 23, 2008. Fernando was a lifelong member of Emmanuel Assembly of God Church in Poth.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Maria Gonzales; his grandchildren, Christina Antuna and John David Soto; his two sons-in-law, Leo Serna Jr. and John Soto; his two brothers; and eight sisters.

Fernando is survived by his children, Oralia G. Serna, Fred Gonzales and wife Janie, and Daniel D. Gonzales and wife Belinda, all of San Antonio; Elda G. Soto of Lubbock, and Minnie G. Antuna and husband Gilbert, and Gracie G. Torres, all of Poth; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, Feb. 26, at 5 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m. in the Emmanuel Assembly of God Church in Poth.

A funeral service was held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the church officiated by the Rev. Jim Collins.

Interment followed in the Emmanuel Assembly of God Cemetery in Poth.

Serving as pallbearers were Lisa Gonzales, Jeff Antuna, Danny Soto, Pete Leal, Danny Gonzales, and Jimmy Serna.
