Auxiliary skit depicts plight of homeless veterans
Guests at the American Legion Post No. 38 Valentine’s Day party witnessed a skit depicting the plight of homeless female veterans in America. Angelica C. Bustamante, 14th District president of the American Legion Auxiliary, organized the program, along with Post Commander Greg Henricks.
The plight of homeless female veterans shows the stresses of having suffered traumatic situations while in the military, such as rape, isolation for reporting it, and other stresses that any soldier would experience. They are, after all, serving our nation in many of the same conditions.
When the crowd saw President Candy Zavala of the 20th District American Legion Auxiliary enter the hall, dressed as she was, no one dared to make eye contact with her as she walked among the crowd to get to the front and ask auxiliary 14th District secretary and Department of Texas Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation representative Norma Szekely, who was at the podium speaking, for a simple plate of food.
We must realize that looking the other way will not fix the problem. Please help when asked. There are too many homeless veterans, male and female, among us.
