Youth ready to enter Nixon-Smiley arena
Members of the Nixon-Smiley FFA practice their judging skills as cowboys sort pairs at Clay Allen’s Lazy F Ranch.
The South Texas stock show season is well under way. While exhibitors are competing in the Houston Livestock Show and with the Star of Texas Fair & Rodeo set to begin March 8, a Gonzales County show is set to begin just down the road in Nixon. This week, the Nixon-Smiley Livestock Show will be held Friday and Saturday, March 8-9, in the Nixon-Smiley Show Barn, located off U.S. 87.
Friday’s activities begin at 3 p.m. with the judging of crafts, followed by the judging of cakes. The awards presentation will be held at 7 p.m.
For those interested in ag mechanics, judging will begin at 7:15 p.m. in the ag mechanics area of the show barn.
Also at this time, feathers will fly with the judging of broilers, followed by turkeys. The judging of market rabbits and fryer rabbits will conclude Friday’s activities.
It’s a morning full of livestock judging for Saturday’s itinerary. The judging of market hogs is set for 9 a.m., followed by lambs, goats, and steers. Judging of breeding stock will take place following the naming of the grand champion steer, with the judging of breeder hogs, lambs, goats, and heifers to take place. The judging of commercial heifers concludes this phase of the show.
Auction, buyers’ info
Saturday evening begins with the buyers’ buffet at 5 p.m. The auction will begin at 6 p.m. with Joey Tomlinson. Sales catalogs will be available at the buffet.
The sale order this year is steers, hogs, lambs, goats, rabbits, turkeys, broilers, ag mechanics, crafts, and then cakes.
To ensure that each exhibitor is provided a fair and equitable price for their projects, donations are being accepted as part of the buyers’ pool. The buyers’ pool ensures that bids are kept at a steady price and assists in averaging out low prices, following the sale.
Anyone wishing to make a donation to the buyers’ pool may do so by calling Norman Coleman at 830-857-3312 or Donnie Janicek at 830-587-6261, or you can mail the donation to: Nixon-Smiley Livestock Show, P.O. Box 554, Nixon, TX 78140.
If you would like to place add-ons, contact Nixon-Smiley Livestock Board Vice President Janna Wheat at 830-857-0513.
For more information, call Board President Harold Rice at 830-534-6682.
