Six Cub Scouts from Floresville Pack 393 held their pinewood derby race in conjunction with their Blue and Gold ceremony on Feb. 23, in the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Floresville. For most of the boys, this was their first derby and a very exciting day.

Webelo Cade Linzy won first place with his derby car. Bear Anthony Duran won second place, and Wolf Wes Theuret won third. Webelo Montana Bone, Tiger Aiden Hinojosa, and Bear Casey Jarutowicz also raced cars they had designed.

Pinewood derby races have been a Scout tradition since 1953. Boys build, sand, and paint their own cars for the race. Boy Scout Luke Keith, who has been working with the pack since September, helped run the derby.

The pack also celebrated Blue and Gold, a birthday party for Boy Scouts of America in honor of their anniversary, which was Feb. 8. They enjoyed a potluck lunch, and leaders Pamela Balboa and Kim Jarutowicz gave out progress toward rank awards as well as academic and sports pins.

The pack meets at 6 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at the DoJoy house across from the Lutheran church. Membership is open to boys in first through fifth grades in Floresville and surrounding areas.
