Charles ‘Chuck’ Franklin Monroe
Charles “Chuck” Franklin Monroe, a longtime resident of Poth, Texas, entered eternal rest Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, at 9:15 a.m. in the Christus Sister Mary Hospice in San Antonio at the age of 86 years, 4 months, and 29 days. Chuck was born Sept. 28, 1926, in Boonville, Ind., the son of George and Cora Miller Monroe.
After retirement from the U.S. Navy, Chuck worked as a retail merchant with H-E-B. Chuck moved to Poth in 1977, and married Lucille Hatwig on Dec. 22, 1979, in San Antonio. Chuck was an active member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Poth, the VFW Post 8555, the Knights of Columbus in Poth, and the Fleet Reserve Branch No. 203, where he faithfully served for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Nellie Grier Monroe.
Chuck is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Lucille Kern Monroe of Poth; his daughters, Patricia Kainer and husband Harvey of Runge and Janice Monroe of San Antonio; his stepchildren, Dennis Kern and wife Joyce of San Antonio and Diane Davis of San Antonio; numerous grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Monday, March 4, at 5 p.m. with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Poth.
A funeral Mass was celebrated on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. in the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Poth, officiated by the Rev. Grzegorz Szewczyk.
Interment, with full military honors, followed in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
Serving as pallbearers were Bryan Camber, Harvey Kainer, Jason Kainer, Robert Rodriguez, Marcie Kern, and Steve Davis.
