La Vernia Connections: Spring is in the air with HammerFest

Hello, La Vernia Citizens,
Spring is here, and I’m thankful for that extra hour of sunshine we gained this week, which will allow for some extra work around the house in the evenings.
Take advantage of the Annual “Spring Cleanup” that takes place Saturday, March 16, through Sunday, March 24. City customers can bring their nonhazardous discards to the city yard on Forrest Street. Hours of operation are 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-5 p.m. Once again, we will be notifying customers on our website, Facebook page, and by mail.
April will be a busy month starting on April 6 with the LV HammerFest benefiting the Arthritis Foundation. If bicycling through the scenic countryside is your thing, then this is your event.
Also on April 6, it’s opening day for the La Vernia Little League and the boys and girls of summer are back! Good luck to all the kids participating this year.
The following weekend is Music Fest in the park. If you like the sounds of jazz, you’ll want to attend, so take your lawn chairs and join us for some great food, drinks, and of course, great jazz!
The city is sponsoring a Town Hall meeting Tuesday, April 16, that will take place at the La Vernia Primary School. This will be a chance for you to voice your opinion on a wide range of subjects pertaining to our city. The feedback we receive is extremely valuable in determining projects and programs to be addressed by the city council. We’ve had one of these in the past and it was a great success, so if possible, please attend and tell us what you think. We will be getting more information and times for the meeting out to you soon.
It’s just around the corner, but city elections will be held on Saturday, May 11, and we have five candidates running for three council seats. Along with city elections, we will be voting for seats on the La Vernia Independent School District board and the Wilson County Hospital District board. Early voting will begin Monday, April 29, and continue until Tuesday, May 7, in the council chambers at City Hall. Please get out and vote!
Till next month.
Robert Gregory is the mayor of La Vernia.
