Jordan Jackson leads Stockdale tennis team

STOCKDALE -- Stockdale High School’s tennis team has been busy this year, and has already participated in five tournaments.

On Feb. 8, the team traveled to San Marcos to play in the Rattler Tournament with the following results. In boys singles, Jordan Jackson finished in third place, Anthony Bennett advanced to the consolation finals, and Darius Dubose made it to the consolation semifinals. In girls singles, LaShondra Dubose retired from the first round of consolation.

The next week, the team traveled to Edison High School in San Antonio. Against tough competition of a 64-draw tournament in each division, the athletes from Stockdale played well. Jackson finished second by defeating players from Seguin, San Antonio Taft, Austin’s McNeil High School, and Holmes. Freshman Travis Covington lost in the first round of consolation, as did the boys doubles team of Bennett and Dubose. In girls singles, Lauryn Coston made it to the second round of consolation, while the girls doubles team of Katarina Wehmeyer and LaShondra Dubose finished after the first round of consolation.

San Marcos was the destination for the week of Feb. 22. Jackson again finished third in boys singles play, while teammate Covington finished after the first round of consolation. Bennett and Dubose, as well as the team of Robert Bischak and Trevor Baumann, along with Coston in girls singles, participated in the first round of consolation.

Stockdale hosted the annual Stockdale Invitational Tournament Feb. 28-March 1, with 17 teams participating. Jackson finished in first place by not dropping a single game against players from Prairie Lea, Somerset, Pearsall, and Luling. Tristan Marquez won against Marion, then lost a hard-fought battle against Karnes City. In the consolation round, Darius Dubose defeated Karnes City before losing the consolation semifinal match. Bennett and Covington teamed up to reach the quarterfinals by defeating players from Poteet, before losing to the eventual champions from Karnes City. Bischak and Baumann participated in the first round of doubles consolation. In girls doubles, Coston and Jessica Puente finished in fourth place by defeating Cuero and Navarro, while teammates Wehmeyer and Dubose won the consolation after defeating Kenedy, Marion, and Cuero.

The Stockdale tennis team played in the Cuero Invitational March 7-8. Jackson medaled once again, bringing home second place in boys singles, while Darius Dubose played in the first round of consolation. Advancing to the second round of boys doubles, Bennett and Covington also played well. In mixed doubles, Clayton Lynn and Jordan Scheel advanced to the semifinals, while Wehmeyer and Dubose made it to the second round of consolation in girls doubles.

With spring break here, the team has a weekend off, but will get back on the road on Thursday and Friday, March 21-22, as it participates in the Marion Invitational Tournament.
