STOCKDALE -- It’s been an exciting few weeks in Stockdale. First, senior swimmer Clayton Lynn participated in the state swim meet, then Lady Brahma powerlifters Katelyn Shaver and MaKaley Perez qualified for the state powerlifting meet. Now, following the Region 5 Division 3 boys powerlifting meet, Darion McMahan and Matt Valadez have become the two most recent Stockdale athletes to qualify for state competition.

The Brahmas sent four athletes to the regional meet in Bishop March 9, with two of the four qualifying for state, and all finishing in the top 10.

Senior Darion McMahan once again led the strong men from Stockdale, as he finished second in the 148-pound class. Darion had a bench press of 335 pounds, and a squat and dead lift of 525 pounds each for two new personal records. The three-lift total of 1,385 pounds was also a new personal record, and it sent him home with a silver medal.

Finishing just behind Darion in the 148-pound class was Valadez. He turned in a bench press of 270 pounds, a squat of 465 pounds, and a dead lift of 485. The weight in the squat was a new personal best for Valadez. His three-lift total of 1,220 pounds was good enough for third place, and will also send him to the state meet.

Devin McMahan and Conner McLaughlin also participated in the regional meet. Devin finished eighth in the 123-pound class with a total lift of 790 pounds. He managed a bench press of 175, a squat of 250, and a deadlift of 365 pounds -- a new personal record. McLaughlin finished ninth in his weight class, lifting a total of 1,120 pounds. He had an impressive bench press of 270 pounds, a squat of 370, and a deadlift of 480 pounds.

The state meet will be held Saturday, March 23, at the Expo Center of Taylor County in Abilene.
