The La Vernia community will participate in a “Shattered Dreams” two-day event on Wednesday and Thursday, April 17-18. This will involve the La Vernia Independent School District, law-enforcement and emergency services, and other community members in a staged “real-life” scenario aimed at preventing underage drinking and driving under the influence. In a parent meeting Feb. 21, Program Coordinator Scott Burgess shared information about the event with district families.

The Shattered Dreams program emphasizes the results of alcohol-related crashes: the shattered dreams of those who drive after drinking, the innocent victims, and their friends and families.

The partnership between the school and community organizations serves as a foundation for follow-up activities to reinforce the program’s prevention messages. The program will include the following interactive components:

•Parent-student workshop

•The Living Dead

•Mock alcohol-related crash (including medical and law-enforcement response)

•Mock death notifications

•Student retreat

•Parent retreat

•Mock memorial

•Mock sentencing trial

These interactive components are supplemented with student-parent support, public relations, evaluation, and follow-up activities. Aspects of most of the activities can be incorporated into the classroom according to the Texas Education Agency’s Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).

The program has also established a Shattered Dreams Scholarship Program for this event. The Shattered Dreams Scholarships will be awarded to seniors at La Vernia High School. All scholarship winners will be picked by an independent selection committee and awarded during Senior Awards Night in May. Scholarships will be based on donations made by the local sponsorships.

For more information, contact Scott Burgess at 210-748-1695 or scott.burgess@code3eduserv.com.
