Five teams from La Vernia will compete Saturday, April 13, in state Odyssey of the Mind competition. La Vernia Intermediate School hosted the regional Odyssey of the Mind competition Feb. 16. Teams from the intermediate, primary, and junior high campuses in La Vernia will now travel to Houston to test their skills against competition from across the Lone Star State.

Odyssey of the Mind, according to its website, is “an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college.” Thousands of teams from the United States and around 25 other countries participate. Should the La Vernia teams be successful in their state bids, World Finals will take place May 22-25 at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich.

Teams from La Vernia include:

Primary

•“It’s How You Look at It”; second place, advancing to state. Coaches: Amie Gaylor and Jessica Cervera. Team: Austin Bean, Zowie Gaylor, Braden Kaitner, Conner Kaitner, Kailey McCloskey, Neely Richardson, and Joel Robertson

Intermediate

•“It’s How You Look at It”; third place. Coaches: Heidi Brown and Kerri Johnson. Team: Chris Brown, Jessica Burns, Allison Hertz, Michael Maldonado, Sean Pruitt, and Abigail Robertson

•“The Email Must Go Through”; first place, advancing to state. Coaches: Karen Comeaux and Brandi Hanselka. Team: Anderson Comeaux, Barrett Hanselka, Carly Herron, Riley Howard, Chris Hubert, Zack Lytle, and Lily Williston

Junior High

•“The Email Must Go Through”; first place, advancing to state. Coaches: Lisa Black and Bonnie Herron. Team: Carson Black, Audrey Comeaux, Grey Geisel, Bradin Hanselka. Jayden Huth. Sara Lira, and Rayne Wegehaupt

•“ARTchitecture: The Musical”; first place, advancing to state. Coaches: Nan Elsik and Joan Robertson. Team: Josh Elsik, Sean Elsik, Kyle Friedrichs, David Garza, Joseph Howard, Jake Lytle, and Sam Robertson

•“It’s How You Look at It”; first place, advancing to state. Coaches: Melissa McCloskey and Kimi Kravitz. Team: Riley Jaskinia, Alyssa Johnson, Meg Kravitz, Nery Lira, Kirsten McCloskey, Sophia McMurry, and Morgan Vajdos

•“It’s How You Look at It”; fourth place. Coaches: Crystal McCloskey and Bridget Redfern. Team: Nena Burg, Macensey Clark, Daniel Maldonado, Ethan Royal, Rachel Smith, and Kayla Spoo
