1965-2013

Richard “Rusty” Mills Jr., 47, of Shiner, Texas, passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2013, in his residence. Rusty was born Dec. 15, 1965, in Floresville. He was the son of Betty (Swanner) and Richard Mills Sr.

He graduated from Floresville High School in 1984. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University in 1988. While attending A&M, he was a member of the A&M Corps of Cadets, Company E1. Rusty married Melinda Palmer on Nov. 9, 1991, in Houston. He was a member of the Shiner Methodist Church in Shiner. He enjoyed camping so he could hunt and fish, only if he wasn’t able to play golf. He loved anything involving A&M (he bled maroon). He was a member of the Shiner School Board, and a charter member of the Shiner Lions Club. He loved to cook and barbecue. He was always working on projects and/or helping someone else with their projects. He was always on the go. The family lived in Hong Kong and Singapore from 1995 to 2000 and traveled extensively throughout Asia. His greatest joy was being with his family and socializing with friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather; Horace “LH” Mills; and his grandmother, Gertrude Swanner.

Rusty is survived by his wife, Melinda; his son, Ian; his parents; two sisters, Lesa Woodlee and husband David and Wendy Mills, all of Floresville; father- and mother-in-law Kermit and Ann Palmer of Sugar Land; and his grandmother, Emma Bea Mills of Floresville.

Family visitation was held on Thursday, March 14, from 5-9 p.m. in the Buffington Funeral Home Chapel in Shiner.

A funeral service was held on Friday at 2 p.m. in the Saints Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Shiner, with the Rev. John Fletcher officiating.

Interment followed in the Shiner City Cemetery in Shiner.

Pallbearers were Jake Jalufka, Stephen Patek, Robert Morkovsky, Gary Peters, John Ploch, Nick Fitzsimon, Rick Dworaczyk, and David Woodlee.

Honorary pallbearers were Mark Williams, Jake Robert Jalufka, John Bean, and Bill Ewing.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shiner Independent School District, P.O. Drawer 804, Shiner, TX 77984.
