Stockdale News: Blue Bonnet Club and social media
The Stockdale Blue Bonnet Club met March 11 in the home of Molly Rowell. Members enjoyed refreshments as they arrived for the regular monthly meeting.
Bernice Person called the meeting to order. Gina Deason read the minutes of the February meeting in the absence of the secretary. She also gave the treasurer’s report and conducted the Roll Call.
Barbara Wiatrek, community project chairman, reported the committee was still in the process of checking prices for the tables needed for the project. Billie Jo Wolff reported 17 cards were sent during the month of February by the card chairman.
The April Hostess will be Bernice Person, with Charlin Akin to be in charge of the program. The April Nursing Home Visitor will be Sandy Lynn.
Sandy Lynn, program leader, gave an interesting social media presentation as the informative portion of her program. “Social Media” was defined as “forms of electronic communication (as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, and personal messages.”
The history of social media began in 1969 when the first Internet provided for the public in the United States, CompuServe, used technology known then as dial-up. In 1971, the first email was sent with the two computers sitting right next to each other and in 1985 America Online (AOL) service opened.
In 1997, the Web had 1 million sites and blogging began.
In 1998, Google opened as a major search engine. In 2003, MySpace was launched; there were more than 3 billion web pages and Apple introduced the online music service iTunes.
In 2004, Facebook was launched as a way to connect U.S. college students and was first opened at Harvard University with more than 19,500 students signing up within the first month. In 2009, it was estimated that a quarter of the Earth’s population used the Internet, which surpassed newspapers as a primary way for Americans to get news.
Ms. Lynn concluded the program with the members being given a “Social Media” quiz. Some discovered “being computer illiterate” was not just a phrase, but an actual description of their talents. The quiz was fun for all, even though it was quite difficult for some.
Members in attendance for the meeting were Charlin Akin, Edith Akin, Linda Carden, Gina Deason, Mary Denson, Sandy Lynn, Bernice Person, Molly Rowell, Pat Rutland, Sharon West, Barbara Wiatrek, Billie Jo Wolff, and Teri Wolff.
