Cemetery group seeks volunteers
The Pearce-Maxwell Cemetery Association continues to make progress on the restoration of the old Maxwell Cemetery on F.M. 536. There are more than 20 active members who go to the site as often as possible to work; however, there is still a lot of brush to be cleared and graves to be found.
Some family members are being sought to help find two graves that are known to be in the cemetery but have not yet been located. Manuel Garcia, who died in about 1920, and Leon Garcia, no date known, are both listed as sons of Pedro and Antonio Garcia. Leon died of a rattlesnake bite, according to notes written by Mrs. Swift and Mrs. Westerman in 1965.
Even if the family does not know where the graves are located, the association would like to have them be a part of our project, honoring all the families buried in the cemetery. Burials are dated from 1858 to 1938. There are approximately 80 graves, but only 55 have been located and identified.
Everyone in the community is welcome to help with the project. The next workday is scheduled for Saturday, April 13.
