Stockdale Brahmas begin district with pair of wins
STOCKDALE -- With an 11-5 overall record, and a tournament championship to its credit, 2013 has been good so far for the Stockdale Brahma baseball team.
After a decent showing at the Flatonia tournament, the Brahmas returned home to begin District 28-2A play last Tuesday against Luling. The Brahmas played a solid game through nearly seven innings, and picked up the win by the final score of 3-0.
After a scoreless first inning of play, Stockdale’s scrappy play paid dividends in the second as the Brahmas scratched two runs. Stockdale added another run in the bottom of the third, and held off Luling for a 3-0 win. Tristan Marquez had one hit and drove in 2 runs for the Brahmas, while Josh Vela drove in the third run on a fielder’s choice. Gage Haley had a double and stole two bases during the game, as he did his part for the win. Taylor Deason sacrificed his body not once, but twice, as the Luling pitching staff drilled him with the ball during two of his three plate appearances. Bandy Larrison picked up the win as he struck out 11 batters and allowed just two hits.
On Friday, the Brahmas traveled to Karnes City to take on the Badgers. Stockdale had no trouble in KC, though, and returned home with a 14-8 victory.
The Brahmas jumped all over Karnes City early in the game, as Stockdale scored 7 runs in the top of the first inning. Karnes City came back to score 1 run in the bottom of the frame, and another in the bottom of the second, but still trailed 7-2 heading into the third inning. Stockdale got rolling again, and the Brahmas added 2 runs in the third and 1 run in the top of the fourth to take a commanding 10-2 lead into the bottom half of the inning. The Badgers scored 2 in the bottom of the fourth, but trailed 10-4 with just three innings to play.
After scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth, the Brahmas got runners across home plate in the seventh, scoring 4 additional runs to take a 14-4 lead. Karnes City came back strong in the bottom of the seventh to score 4 of their own, but Stockdale won 14-8 to secure its second district win in as many games.
Vela and Haley led the Brahmas at the plate with four hits apiece, and Miguel Marquez was close behind with three hits, including a double. Tristan Marquez and Larrison each had two hits as well. Dusty Mosier showed his speed on the base path, as he went 4 for 4 on stolen bases. Vela also nabbed two bags on two attempts. Mikey Opela pitched 6-1/3 innings for Stockdale, striking out nine batters and giving up two walks.
The Brahmas were scheduled to face Poth in Stockdale on Tuesday, and will travel to Schulenburg this Friday. Both games were set to start at 7 p.m.
