Reporting error accounts for hospital’s near $1M loss

The February 2013 financial statistical report for the Connally Memorial Medical Center indicates a net loss of $994,280. But according to the hospital’s management, this is related to a mistake in reporting a meaningful use payment received late last year.

Connally’s Finance Director Officer Patricia Solis told the Wilson Memorial Hospital District board at its March 21 meeting that the hospital actually made $269,575 in net income for the month. An approximately $1.2 million decrease in “Other Receivables,” she said, is because of a recent recommendation by the hospital’s auditors that the payment should have been applied to September 2012, instead of October. As a result, an adjustment was made.

Karl Hittle of Endeavor Healthcare, the hospital’s management company, said Connally is on course to receive another $750,000 payment in September 2013 and that continued adjustments will be made to offset the effects of the previous error.

In other business, the board engaged in a lengthy discussion about the hospital’s ongoing search for a successor for outgoing Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jerome Brooks. Hittle said that after the board recently interviewed three candidates, it selected a finalist and an alternate, both of whom have since declined.

Hittle said Endeavor’s recruiter indicated that the finalist commented that he was not interested in coming to Connally because “the community is not what he expected.”

The alternate, Hittle said, “is pursuing another opportunity and he told the recruiter that he didn’t get a good vibe from the board.”

Endeavor has scheduled 10 new candidates for interviews this week, Hittle said. The management firm has since increased the proposed salary and it plans to whittle the field down to two or three that will be introduced to the board.

“We will find the best candidate for us,” he said. “We’re not going to settle. We’re going to keep working.”

Board member Tommy Soriero suggested that the board ought to focus its efforts on selling the hospital and the community, leaving the vetting of the applicants to Hittle and to board President Ronnie Eckel.

“It’s very cold, and it’s a real turnoff to these people to have them sit down in the hot chair and for the board to come grill them,” Soriero said.

He added, “All we’re going to do is turn them off. We’ve had three and we’ve turned off three.”

Board member Monica Flores disagreed, saying that a potential CEO should get a feel for the board and that he or she should be able to handle pressure. Despite this, the rest of the board reached a consensus to have Hittle, Eckel, and Chief of Staff Emily Frye vet the candidates before they are introduced to the board.

The board also:

•Approved offering $17,500 per month to Dr. Leonardo Profenna to serve as the medical director of the hospital’s wound care and hyperbaric center. The agreement is pending Profenna’s approval.

•Voted to direct attorney Donna McElroy of Cox Smith to prepare a lawsuit against Davis & Wright, P.C. -- formerly Davis & Wilkerson -- related to its representation of the hospital in the execution of a 2009 physician recruitment agreement with doctors Jerome D. Kizzart and Roy S. Fisher. The agreement has since failed and Connally alleges that it continues to suffer damages because of Davis & Wilkerson’s advice. The suit is set for review at the board’s next meeting.

•Received a presentation from Dane Bonecutter, director of human resources and risk management, related to how the upcoming implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 -- commonly called “ObamaCare” -- will affect Connally.

In attendance: Board members Amy Clark, Sue Coats, Monica Flores, Keith Johanson, Sam Carter, Tommy Soriero, Ronny Eckel, Jimmy Fietsam, and Sandy Yow; Chief of Staff Emily Frye, Administrative Assistant Shirley Bienek, Finance Director Pat Solis, Marketing Director Nancy Preyor-Johnson, Chief of Nursing Celeste Brizzee, Chief Executive Officer Jerome Brooks; and Karl Hittle of Endeavor Healthcare.
