Brahma tennis travels to Seguin, junior high hosts meet

SEGUIN -- Stockdale’s tennis teams traveled to Starcke Park to play in the Marion Tournament March 21-22.

Anthony Bennett and Travis Covington played their best tennis of the year and won the third-place medal by defeating teams from Nixon-Smiley, Luling, and Marion. Brahma teammates Robert Bischak and Trevor Baumann played in the first round of consolation. Jordan Jackson won second place in boys singles by defeating players from Poth and Poteet. Darius DuBose was the consolation runner-up.

In mixed doubles, the team of Clayton Lynn and Jordan Scheel beat a Poteet duo before falling to Navarro. After losing a hard-fought battle with another Poteet team, they finished the tournament in fourth place.

In girls doubles, Katerina Wehmeyer and LaShondra DuBose made it to the finals by beating Marion and Luling. They won second-place honors after falling to Nixon-Smiley.

The boys and mixed doubles teams were scheduled to play in Hallettsville on March 25, while the girls were set to be in Nordheim, Wednesday, March 27.

In junior high tennis, Stockdale hosted a meet on the new courts in Stockdale, and several young players came out March 23 to play.

In the seventh-grade boys singles division, Matthew Dunn won first place. Teammates Collin Akin and Gene Nugent won consolation and consolation runner-up, respectively. The seventh-grade team of Jalen Cano and Jorge Navarro were the consolation runners-up. In seventh-grade girls doubles, Karlye Lynn and Callye McGee won third place.

Justin Cannon was the consolation runner-up in eighth-grade boys singles. Velma Vidal was fourth in eighth-grade girls singles. The team of Hannah Hernandez and Lori Marroquin were third in girls doubles.

The junior high teams will go to Cuero on Saturday, April 20.
