Retired teachers attend TRTA Day

Seven members of the Wilson County Retired School Personnel traveled to Austin on March 20 to participate in Texas Retired Teachers Association’s “TRTA Day at the Capitol.”
Dottie Bowden, Maria Herrera, Priscilla Kincaid, Shirley Lyssy, Beverly Moltz, Melissa Ramos, and Bonnie Rice joined more than 1,000 retired educators who traveled from as far as Connecticut, Colorado, and every area of Texas to bring a message to the Texas Legislature.
A sea of red shirts flooded the Capitol as members visited their legislators and shared information about bills that would impact retirees and active teachers.
Rep. Jim Keffer authored HB1383, which would raise the state contribution to the Teacher Retirement System. Rep. John Kuempel was among the first to co-author this bill. Chairman of the Pensions Committee, Rep. Bill Callegari, made special efforts to include HB1383 during the week’s pension hearing. Both Keffer and Callegari spoke to TRTA during the rally and ice cream social on the east lawn. Sen. Judith Zaffirini made remarks from the Senate floor in support of educators and acknowledging the impact they make on the state of Texas.
Retirees as well as current educators are encouraged to thank these legislators for their efforts to improve the lives of retired Texas school personnel.
