FLORESVILLE -- The Floresville 4A Corp. board members are working to outline responsibilities in an effort to transition control of the operations of the Floresville Event Center back to the board. They continued these efforts during their March 25 regular meeting.

During its March 14 regular meeting, the Floresville City Council approved for the 4A to take over operational control of the Floresville Event Center by fiscal year 2014-15.

Melissa Popham, the 4A board’s secretary/treasurer, led the discussion, stating that the best place to start is with the pricing of the event center, to work toward making the facility a self-sustaining entity. The current rate for weekend rental of the ballroom is $1,850, plus $150 for kitchen use; this rate could change to a total of $2,300, including use of the kitchen.

Discussion led to a general consensus that prices for using the facility must be increased.

“We have to have the mindset that this is the best thing for our center, not my brother, my cousin, or my uncle, but this is the best thing for our center and if we don’t get that mindset then we’re all doomed,” Popham said.

Gloria Martinez, currently tasked with management of the event center, said she believes the increased fees will help the center survive.

“In order for the building to stand on its own, it will have to be able to create enough money to pay for itself,” Martinez said. “That’s up to the board to decide and if that’s what they want to do, then that’s what’ll happen. I’m just there to work for them.”

The price increases, according to Martinez, first will need to be presented to city council for approval.

This fiasco is a prime example of not having proper accounting proceedures in place. The place could be booked every hour of every day and without proper accounting no one would know if it was paying it's way or not. Job one ... More ›

Well hopefully with people watching every step there will be no more money walking away. Like I say, if you sell a beer at $1.25 and you have 10 beers to sell, you should have $12.50. Easy math!!!

I agree with everyone here - we need to see The Books. The City Manager and the Comptroller (with the Mayors help) have provided 2012 bank statement and supporting information to me and the 4-A board. I am still wading through ... More ›

Exactly right! The best place to start is with the books. Proper accounting may eliminate the need to raise fees. Without proper accounting proceedures and controls you are only guessing. Just like the previous administration. ... More ›

Rumors have circulated since the Event Center opened that some of the people that were in charge or worked the concession stand pocketed some of the proceeds. In fact a current city employee has been rumored to have placed many ... More ›
