Tribute to U.S. military draws crowd to courthouse for group photo, message

FLORESVILLE -- They came from around Wilson County and beyond its borders, intent on participating in a gesture of thanks to the men and women currently in the U.S. armed forces.

Gathering outside the Wilson County Court-house under gray skies, more than 200 area residents posed for a photograph depicting their patriotism and support for military men and women, especially those serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The May 7 event resulted in a photograph that appeared on the front page of the May 12 edition of the Wilson County News.

Atop the photo, the newspaper ran a brief text conveying a note of gratitude to U.S. troops:

“A message from South Texas to all our troops: ‘For the sacrifices you make to keep America strong and free, we salute you with heartfelt gratitude. You are our heroes and we will not forget you. On this Armed Forces Day, May 15, as on every day, you are in our prayers. God be with you.’”

Inspiration for the “thank you” message to American troops came from a company of Marines in Afghanistan whose photo appeared in the May 5 edition of the Wilson County News. With assistance from a family member of one of the Marines in the company, the military unit advised via e-mail for the town of Floresville to “sleep well” knowing the troops were on duty.

An idea to reciprocate the Marines’ message was discussed by the newspaper staff, and efforts to organize a reply led to the May 7 photo shoot conducted by professional photographer Joel Spring.
The public speaks

Reporters for the Wilson County News were on hand at the May 7 event to canvas the crowd and ask private citizens what inspired them to take part in the tribute to the troops.

Area residents Dennis and Cindy Kotara brought their family to show their support for the troops. Dennis said his daughter, Abby Barrientes, said she wanted to express support for those serving in Iraq, despite her opposition to the war, which she said “shouldn’t have ever started.”

Gina Childress dressed her grandson, 2-year-old Kaden Quintanilla, in camouflage and carried a sign that said “Future Marine.” Childress said she wanted to express her thanks to the military.

“We have to stand behind them,” she said. “I have a cousin married to a Marine who is on his second tour. We’re praying for him every day.”

Connie Reyes was thinking of three grandchildren serving in the military -- a grandson in the Air Force, a granddaughter in the Army, and another granddaughter in the Air Force who recently returned from duty in Iraq.

“I think this is wonderful to support them,” said Reyes, speaking of the troop tribute. “They need to know someone’s thinking of them.”

When asked by a reporter if some people may have forgotten the troops, Reyes agreed.

“I think so,” she said. “It’s been going on so long. [Some people] started to talk bad about why the war’s going on.”

Reyes was not the only person who spoke about the politicizing of the war, and ongoing efforts by U.S. and multinational forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Another area resident, Cap Vajdos, said troops currently serving in those areas should know they have the support of the American public.

“All they [troops] need to know is that some people back here give a damn no matter what they may hear from the media and the so-called politicians,” Vajdos said.
A closer look

When approached by a reporter, some who participated in the tribute offered more in-depth views on their loved ones currently serving in the military.

Karnes County Sheriff Bobby Mutz traveled to Floresville to honor troops such as his son, Mitchel, 21, an Army scout who deployed to Iraq in March.

Mutz said “faith in God” has helped him cope with the apprehension of knowing his son is performing such a dangerous job. The Karnes County lawman said the community’s message to the troops was a morale booster not just for them, but for their family members back in the United States.

“Things like this showing support for our guys and girls over there in that part of the country, that’s what keeps you going and keeps your mind off it,” said Mutz, who keeps in contact with his son via e-mail.

Based on those communications with his son, Mutz said he believes troop morale is high in Iraq.

“They’re focused on their job,” he said.

Mitchel Mutz joined the military after he spent two years in college and realized, “he really wasn’t certain what he wanted to do” with his life, according to his father.

An enlistment in the Army soon followed.

“He made the decision to join,” Mutz said. “This is what he wanted.”

Area resident Ophelia Silva held a photograph of her daughter, 22-year-old Navy Corpsman Tammy Dull, while participating in the tribute to America’s military personnel. Currently stationed in North Carolina, Dull previously spent six months in Kuwait and was there when the war in Iraq began.

Silva admitted to experiencing many “sleepless nights” while waiting for her daughter to return from the Middle East.

Dull, a 2000 graduate of Floresville High School, was a natural candidate for military service, her mother said.

“She always volunteered when she was younger,” said Silva, who added that her daughter gave some of her time to an area nursing home before graduating from high school. “She always liked helping people.”

The tribute to the troops brought Silva to the Wilson County Courthouse to show support for those people who, like her daughter, are serving their country.

“They need to know that there’s people out here that care and are concerned about them, and my prayers are with them every day,” Silva said.
