Jackson finishes as district champ

The Stockdale tennis team participated in the Hallettsville Tennis Tournament March 25, the Runge Tournament on March 27, and the District 28-2A Tournament April 5-6.
In Hallettsville, Jordan Jackson led the Brahmas with his first-place finish in singles play, while Darius DuBose earned a fourth-place finish. Anthony Bennett and Tristan Marquez reached the consolation final in doubles play, and the team of Trevor Baumann and Wyatt Babrysch played into the first round of consolation.
In Runge, Lauryn Coston and Jessica Puente finished first in girls doubles play.
The district tournament was held April 5-6 at Starcke Park in Seguin. Stockdale had 16 players participate.
In boys doubles, Robert Bischak and Baumann lost in the quarterfinals to a tough team from Luling. The other boys doubles team of Bennett and Travis Covington beat the team from Poth with a score of 6-0, 6-2, before losing to Schulenburg.
Katarina Wehmeyer and LaShondra DuBose had to retire due to injury during their first doubles match, after having split sets with the team from Luling. In the quarterfinals, Coston and Puente won 6-4, 6-2 against girls from Schulenburg. The semifinal was a hard-fought battle between Stockdale and Hallettsville. In the end, Hallettsville came out on top with scores of 6-4, 6-7, 6-4. The team of Coston and Puente earned fourth place in district.
In mixed doubles, Clayton Lynn and Jordan Scheel won the first match by defeating Karnes City 6-3, 6-0, then met a very strong team from Schulenburg, which won the match. Darius DuBose and Vanessa Urrabazo also played mixed doubles, losing in the quarterfinals to the eventual third-place team from Schulenburg.
Boys singles competitors included Marquez and Jackson. Marquez won his first match against Nixon-Smiley. It was a two-hour match, during which Marquez came from behind to take the win, 2-6, 6-1, 7-5. In the semifinals, he fell to a very strong Schulenburg player. Third slipped away, with another Schulenburg player winning 6-1, 1-6, 6-4.
Jackson ended up as the district champion after defeating two players from Schulenburg. In the first round he won 6-1, 6-0. The final was a great match to watch, with Stockdale coming out on top 6-1, 6-4. Jackson has won a district title during each of his four years of high school. Jackson won gold in doubles as a freshman, then in singles play the last three years.
In junior varsity play, Laci Dugi and Jessi Opela competed in mixed doubles. In a very close match, they finished in second place in district.
The varsity regional tournament will be played Wednesday and Thursday, April 17-18, in San Marcos.
