NIXON -- A 24-year-old Nixon-Smiley Middle School teacher is on suspension with pay pending the outcome of a criminal investigation, after he allegedly had an improper relationship with a 14-year-old female student.

According to a press release from the Nixon Police Department, officers arrested Houston Alan Mercier April 9 and charged him with an “improper relationship between educator and student,” which is a second-degree felony. Mercier was transported to the Gonzales County Jail, where records indicate he posted $30,000 bond and was released April 10.

Nixon-Smiley Consolidated Independent School District Superintendent Cathy Booth released a statement on the district’s website, which also is available below.
