4A board considers event center future

FLORESVILLE -- Citizens looking to book a special occasion at the Floresville Event Center may find that it will hurt their wallets more than in years past.

During its April 8 meeting, the Floresville 4A Corp. board approved a tentative new fee schedule, drafted mostly by board Vice President Melissa Popham. This is set to dramatically increase several of the rates at the event center. The fees will be presented to the Floresville City Council for review and approval.

This move comes in response to a March 14 directive by the Floresville City Council, which called for the 4A board to assume responsibilities for the daily operations of the Floresville Event Center by fiscal year 2014-15. It also follows the discussion at the March 25 meeting of the 4A board, in which the idea of price increases was the main topic of discussion.

The increases are designed to raise revenue for the Floresville Event Center as control of the center transitions from the city back to the 4A board.

“This fee schedule may change,” 4A President Bill Gleeson said. “We are going to present it to the city council, take their suggestions, and meet again [on April 29] to continue the evaluation if council requests it. “

Some fees, such as use of the outdoor patio at the Floresville Event Center, will more than double under the proposed plan. Currently, rental of the patio with restroom access is priced at $200 per day, or $400 per day if the client wishes to utilize the kitchen area. Under the proposed increases, those prices will increase to $500 or $800 per day, respectively, an increase of more than 100 percent.

Other items, such as cleanup of the gym, projector with screen (three are available), coffee, use of the front television screen, and staff to set up audio/visual equipment, also will double over their former costs.

Not all of the fees are set to change as dramatically.

Also discussed April 8 was the availability of the Floresville Event Center for use by nonprofit organizations and government entities.

The board agreed unanimously that a 20 percent discount be given to 501c(3) groups. The board stipulated also that local government entities may request use of the center free of charge for nonprofit events and training purposes. All such requests shall be approved by the board and considered on a case-by-case basis.

In attendance: City Manager Andy Joslin; and 4A board members Bill Gleeson, Melissa Popham, Deb Conoly, and Paige Pullin.

It would be cool to open a barbecue, beer, hamburger joint there. With volleyball courts in the back and maybe a stage for bands.

That's all fine and good. But again I ask, "On what are they basing these increases?" A business can't just one day wake up and say that prices are too low, then find some arbitrary percentage in the air by which ... More ›
