FLORESVILLE -- The Floresville varsity tennis team competed at district in Uvalde this past Monday and Tuesday, April 8-9. It was the last tournament the varsity team of the 2012-13 school year would all compete in together. However, it certainly is not the last tournament.

Seniors Madison Pollok, Matthew Hoelscher, Giordi Carrillo, James Wayne, Sean Rienertson, and Lindsey Wilson all won first place, giving them a spot at the regional tournament taking place this Tuesday and Wednesday, April 16-17, at Blossom Athletic Center in San Antonio. Alexandria Butts, Angelica Gonzales-Brewington, Trevor Moy, Julian Gonzales, and Kaia Carrillo all won third place in their own divisions, earning them an alternate spot in regionals. Because of the entire team’s success, both the boys and the girls won the District 29-4A championship.

Seniors Pollok and Hoelscher competed in the mixed doubles division and won first place without dropping a single game in the entire district tournament. Together, Pollok and Hoelscher have had an excellent season, winning first place at all five of the pre-district tournaments. Their overall record is 24-0.

Seniors Giordi Carrillo and Wayne competed in the boys doubles division and won first place in the district tournament. They won 6-1, 6-0 in their finals against Uvalde. Carrillo and Wayne dominated in boys doubles the entire season. They received first at the Boerne Tournament, second in San Marcos, third in Floresville, fifth in Fredericksburg, and second in the pre-district Uvalde Tournament. They will be going into regionals with a 21-6 overall record.

Rienertson won first place in the boys singles division. He won his first two rounds in district ably, 7-6, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals. He then defeated Uvalde’s Kyler Stephens, 6-1, 6-2, in the finals. Rienertson has also had a successful pre-district season, getting first in the Floresville Tournament and second at the Fredericksburg Tournament. With his win at district, he is going into regionals with a 16-3 overall record.

Wilson also won first place in the district tournament, winning the girls singles division. Getting a first-round bye, Lindsey won her second round very handily, 6-0, 6-0. In the semifinals she won handily again, 6-1,6-0. In the finals Lindsey won 7-5, 7-6(2) against Uvalde’s Dariela Perez. After this tournament Lindsey has a record of 15-0 for this spring, earning first place in the San Marcos, Fredericksburg, and Floresville tournaments. Also, Lindsey is undefeated in singles for the entire school year.

Seniors Butts and Gonzales-Brewington placed third in the girls doubles division. After a tough loss in the semifinals to Medina Valley 6-3, 6-4, they came back and won the third-place match, 6-2, 6-1, against Uvalde. By earning third place they got a chance to snatch the second-place spot through a playback match. Unfortunately, they came out in third place after losing a tough three-set match against Medina Valley, 5-7, 6-2, 3-6. Butts and Gonzales-Brewington finished their last season with a 6-4 overall record.

Sophomore Moy and junior Gonzales competed in the boys doubles division. After winning their first two rounds, then losing in the semifinals, they competed for third place. They defeated Medina Valley, 6-2, 6-2, to earn their third-place medal and an alternate spot at regionals.

Sophomore Kaia Carrillo earned third place in the girls singles division. After winning her first two rounds she lost to Uvalde’s Dariela Perez in the semifinals. Carrillo then came back and won the third-place match against Uvalde’s Kendall Walker, 6-3, 7-5.

Junior Adrian Rico lost a hard match in the quarterfinals to Harlandale’s Berkley Ginithan, 6-3, 6-2, in the boys singles division. Seniors Shelby Carpenter and Sheldon Snyder lost a tough three-set match in the quarterfinals to Harlandale, 6-3, 5-7, 5-7, in the mixed doubles division. Junior Tracie DeLeon and freshman Marissa Lyssy competed in the girls doubles division and also lost a difficult match in the quarterfinals to Medina Valley, 7-5, 6-4.

For the six seniors competing in regionals this week, they all hope to make it to the State Tournament. They know that this tournament could possibly be their last, and they plan to leave everything they have out on the court.
