LA VERNIA -- Members of the Greater La Vernia Chamber of Commerce have more questions than answers following news that the treasurer of their board is under investigation for allegations related to the misapplication of funds. The board held an informal emergency meeting April 22 to figure out what to do next.

Chamber Vice President Elaine Mazurek Stephens led the meeting, which she said was not an official gathering of the board because the organization's bylaws require a minimum of 72 hours notice prior to a meeting.

The chamber's former treasurer, Patsy Ritchey, who up until April 18 was an agent with Farmers Insurance, is currently under investigation by the Bexar County District Attorney's Office, Stephens said earlier. While the vice president could not comment about the ongoing investigation, she said that it centered around the alleged misapplication of funds. This prompted the chamber to check its own books.

"It does appear that there is money missing from our bank account," Stephens told those in attendance. "It does appear to be more than $20,000."

Meanwhile, Farmers Insurance spokesman Mark Toohey told the Wilson County News that the company terminated its relationship with Ritchey April 18. Her former clients are advised to call Farmers' district office at 210-338-6884 for further information.
