1925-2013

Macario “Mac” De La Zerda, 87, a longtime resident of Poth, Texas, entered eternal rest Sunday, April 21, 2013. Mac was born in Sutherland Springs, July 26, 1925, to Juan Antonio and Cruz Garcia De La Zerda. Later, they moved to Kosciusko where they sharecropped on the Aloysius Kolodziej Sr. farm.

At the age of 17, he volunteered to join the U.S. Navy to serve his country. Upon completion of boot camp at San Diego, Calif., his wife, Juanita Garza De La Zerda, and infant daughter, Sally, met him in San Diego and visited for several days. Not knowing their destination, Mac and his shipmates sailed for 16 days to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The group’s final destination was Samar Island in the Philippines, where he was stationed for one year. Mac returned to the states on the USS Edgecomb via the port at Swan Island, Ore. He was honorably discharged from Camp Wallace, Texas, in 1946.

Mac served Wilson County and the Poth community in various capacities. He worked for Wilson County for many years and had come to know virtually every farm and resident of the county. He was awarded a lifetime membership in VFW Post 8555 in 1979, where he served as former Post Commander and remained a principal leader in that organization. He served on the Poth City Council and the Poth Housing Authority. An active member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, he also enjoyed being a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of more than 64 years, Juanita Garza De La Zerda; his brothers, Simon and Gabino De La Zerda; sister Emilia De La Zerda; and son-in-law Victor Coronado.

Mac is survived by his sister, Francisca Cantu of Wisconsin; his children, Sally Coronado, Jimmy De La Zerda, Adela Ashburn and husband Michael, Stella Soliz, Delia Ramirez, Eloisa Ingmire, Johnny De La Zerda and wife Mary Esther, Jesse De La Zerda, Dwayne De La Zerda and wife Jodi, and Darla Polasek and husband Edward; 20 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will begin Wednesday, April 24, at 5 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home in Poth, with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Poth.

Interment will follow in the Blessed Sacrament Cemetery in Poth.
