Youth earn grand, reserve honors

LA VERNIA -- Tomorrow’s leaders are learning and honing their animal-husbandry skills, and members of the La Vernia FFA and area 4-H clubs exhibited the results of their efforts Feb. 28 and March 1-2 in the 56th annual La Vernia Junior Livestock & Poultry Show.

When the dust settled, a couple of first-time exhibitors had earned grand champion titles, including Braden Recker in the broiler division and Haley Cone with her turkey.

While the number of steers was down this year -- almost half from a year prior -- it did not dampen the spirits of the exhibitors. Emily Ramzinski and her steer walked away with the grand champion title.

Emily retained the reserve champion turkey title she won last year.

Colton Bennett also defended his reserve champion goat title.

Reserve champion broiler honors went to Meg Kravitz, a title earned by her sister, Samantha, in 2012.

Chesney Halsey, who earned the reserve champion steer title in 2012, earned another reserve champion title, this year in the swine show.

Last year’s reserve champion lamb exhibitor, Clayton Matney, climbed the ladder to earn top honors.

For the complete list of grand and reserve champion exhibitors, see left.

More than half of the showmanship winners defended their titles this year, including Bo Garcia and Morgan Burns in the lamb division; Valerie Swygard, goat; Claire and Emma Weber, rabbit; and Leighton Robbins and Emma Kotzur, heifer division. See photo for the complete list of winners.

Best of show honors in the baked foods show went to Braden Lane for his uniced cake in the senior division. Cole Sendemer earned top baker in the junior division with bar cookies. Morgan Mills and Kyla Barron earned grand and reserve champion, respectively, in the craft competition.
