Busy Beavers win big in San Antonio, Houston
The Falls City Tractor Restoration team, along with the owner of the John Deere B tractor, including (from left) Jon Swierc, Clinton Noll, Katie Johnson, Cody Jendrusch, Jake Hinds, Katie Pollok, and Travis Glover, celebrates earning a blue ribbon during the San Antonio Livestock Show & Rodeo.
The Falls City Beavers and Beaverettes may be known for their athletic skills on the field, but the students also excel in the agricultural field.
After the Karnes County Youth Show was held, the FFA’ers traveled to the San Antonio Livestock Show & Rodeo in February to exhibit their animals.
Conner Jendrusch exhibited the reserve champion Maine Anjou steer, allowing him to sell in the auction, earning more than $8,300 (without add-on premiums). For earning reserve champion honors, he was awarded a $10,000 San Antonio Livestock Exposition scholarship.
Conner continued his winning streak by placing first at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo held in March. This time, he entered the auction ring with a Chianina steer, guaranteeing him a minimum of $6,000.
He was joined by Zach Jimerson, who placed second with his AOB steer, and garnering him at least $5,000.
Travis Glover entered the Houston ring with his fourth-place ABC steer, guaranteering him at least $2,750.
Falls City was also represented in the 4-H/FFA Range and Pasture Plant Identification team competition March 2 during the Houston show. Individual honors included Chloe Wilson, fifth place; Katy Wiatrek, seventh; Luke Jimerson, ninth; and Katelyn Wilson, 11th place. They were all awarded individual plaques and a team trophy for their fourth-place finish.
The team of Jon Swierc, Katie Johnson, Cody Jendrusch, Jake Hinds, Katie Pollok, and Travis Glover also competed in the San Antonio and Houston shows in the tractor restoration contest, for the first time in Falls City history.
For their hard work and effort, they earned a blue ribbon during the San Antonio Livestock Show & Rodeo and fourth place in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
Clinton Noll, a former student of Falls City ag science teacher Brett Wright, “offered to do the project with the students at his shop,” Wright said. “The entire project was completed at Clinton’s shop with the help of his dad, James. They [the team] started on the tractor in mid-December and completely dismantled and reassembled the tractor by Feb. 22.”
Clinton and James Noll of Falls City, owners of the John Deere 1951 “Styled” B tractor, served as sponsors for the competition.
According to Falls City FFA parent Amy Lubbock Dzuik, “Gathering data about the tractor is part of the contest itself; therefore it is up to the participants to keep all information, records, and photos of the restoration process in a notebook reporting all of their data.”
According to the team’s research, the B tractor was built to handle two-bottom plow and two-row equipment. More than 300,000 tractors were manufactured between 1934 and 1952. This gasoline-powered “crop design” tractor cost approximately $2,100 in 1952.
The tractor returned to the road April 29 to compete in Kingsville.
This is not the first time the Nolls have been involved with tractor restoration.
In 2010, the family sponsored and provided a 1937 John Deere Model B tractor purchased by James’ grandfather in the early 1940s, to Colin Graff of the Hondo FFA. Colin placed fourth overall in the 2010 San Antonio ag mechanic competition and reserve champion of the 2010 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s ag mechanic competition. Colin went on to win reserve champion at the 2010 national DeloTractor Restoration contest held during the National FFA Convention.
Last year, Paul Stratemann and Craig Sumner of the Floresville FFA restored a 1938 John Deere G tractor owned by the Noll family. The duo placed first in the age class and went on to win the entire Tractor Restoration Contest in the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. In Houston, the tractor was awarded a blue ribbon and placed third in its class.
The Falls City students “have talked about the option of competing at the Delo TRC [tractor restoration contest] at the National FFA Convention, but have not chosen whether or not they will enter,” Dzuik said. “The Delo TRC deadline is Aug. 26, so they have time ... and [the event] will be the same time almost all of them will be starting college.”
