Letter: Earth Day 2013 — Did anyone notice?

Editor:

April 22 was the 43rd observance of Earth Day. If the H-E-B stores had not given away free Earth Day bags to customers, very few would have taken notice of the day.

When Earth Day was first proclaimed on April 22, 1970, it was a really big event in the news media. Hundreds of “experts” with impressive letters after their names, e.g. Ph.D., LLD, and J.D., gave their opinions on how imperiled our global environment had become and how close to a global disaster we were.

The experts’ concerns were centered on three major areas:

•Overpopulation leading to worldwide famine and starvation. Agriculture would fail to provide enough food. Even prosperous nations in the Americas and Europe would see millions die of starvation in 1980.

•Particulate contamination (dust) would shut out the sun’s heat and a new Ice Age might be under way by 1980. How about that?

•Contamination of the oceans would kill all marine life and the oceans would become a virtual cesspool by 1990.

Rush Limbaugh was able to research and reveal all these dire prophecies from April 1970. So much for the predictions of academic eggheads driven by their political agendas and motivations. Is it any wonder that people have become skeptical and immune to a passing parade of anti-social phenomena? After all, we older folks have seen Woodstock, hippies, flower children, the Age of Aquarius, Hare Krishnas, and a bunch of other freaks appear briefly and then, thankfully, disappear.
