1936-2013

Janet Chappell-Gann, a resident of Austin, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, April 30, 2013. She was born on Nov. 17, 1936.

Janet grew up in Stockdale, where she attended Stockdale Elementary and High School. After moving to Austin, she enrolled in Durham’s Business College, where she earned her Business Office Administration certification. She graduated early and with honors. She also held the record for the fastest speed writing transcription. This earned her an invitation to teach at the college, which she eagerly accepted. Upon graduating, she held positions in business administration at Kelly Air Force Base, legal administrative assistant with the Texas Education Agency, and also taught junior high Sunday school at Woodlawn Baptist Church. Janet was an active member of her church and most recently was a member of Bannockburn Baptist.

Her passions included vacationing in Rockport with her family, trying out new Mexican food restaurants, painting, gardening, cooking, rescuing animals of all kinds, singing in the church choir, reading her Bible, playing the piano, and spending time with her friends and family. The events that she revered as the most significant in her life were being crowned Homecoming queen and being the high school drum majorette, graduating from Durham’s Business College, serving as church clerk, swimming with dolphins in the Bahamas, and her country drive with Mark through Fredericksburg and Kerrville, where they dined at Billie Gene’s on the Guadalupe River. One of the most special events was the birth of her only grandson, Kyle.

In remembrance of our beloved mother, Janet Gann, we will miss you every day for the rest of our lives. You have loved, cared for, taught, and inspired not only your children, but so many people who have come into your life. Everything you stood for or endeavored, you did so with the greatest passion and to glorify God. We have peace knowing you are with your Heavenly Father, where strife, sickness, nor suffering can ever touch you again, said her family.

Janet is survived by her three children, John Mark Gann, Judy Kay McGee, and Susan Gail Horton; and one grandchild, Kyle Mitchell Horton.

The family received friends on Friday, May 3, at 1 p.m. in the First Baptist Church in Stockdale.

A funeral service was held on Friday at 2 p.m. in the church with the Rev. John C. Hallum officiating.

Interment followed in the Stockdale Cemetery in Stockdale.

Serving as pallbearers were Jerry Coddington, Greg Barnes, Andy Cleveland, and Peter Parcher.

Honorary pallbearer was Nan Tackitt.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice Austin’s Christopher House, 2820 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Austin, TX 78702.
