Funeral directors honor Finch
Troy Hewell Finch (center) receives the award for 2012-13 Funeral Director of the Year.
Troy Hewell Finch, the owner of Finch Funeral Chapels that operate in La Vernia, Stockdale, Nixon, Yorktown, and Runge, was selected by his peers and named 2012-13 Funeral Director of the Year by the South Central Texas Funeral Directors Association. The association is the largest of eight Texas regions covering 56 counties, including San Antonio, Austin, and Victoria. As the recipient of the award, Troy will be one of eight people considered for the Texas Funeral Director of the Year.
Troy was born to be a funeral director. He was born in Nixon, Texas, just a few blocks from the family funeral home. His parents, Don and Gladyne (Hewell) Finch, owned the funeral home and also had a ranching operation near Gillett and Mound Creek in Karnes County. During his young life, Troy would often play “funeral director” by putting on a suit and welcoming guests at the front door during visitations.
He continued helping the family business until he graduated from Nixon High School in 1984. Troy attained a BBA in management from Southwest Texas State University in 1988. He attained an Associate of Science in Funeral Service from Commonwealth College of Funeral Service in 1989, which is also where he met his wife of 23 years, Janet (Cacho) Finch.
In 1989, Troy joined his family business in Nixon and has been a licensed funeral director since 1990. In 1992, he helped his father build a funeral home in La Vernia. Troy and Janet moved to La Vernia at that time to manage the new location. In 1999, they purchased Myers Funeral Home in Stockdale, bought his father’s funeral chapels in Nixon and La Vernia in 2005, and in 2007, they purchased Janssen Funeral Homes in Yorktown and Runge.
By the age of 41, with the joint operation of the five funeral homes, Troy had become the largest funeral concern in Wilson, Gonzales, Dewitt, and Karnes counties.
In addition to managing the funeral homes, from 1994-96, Troy was the past president of the South Central Texas Funeral Directors Association and board of director for the Texas Funeral Directors Association. He was a two-time past president of the La Vernia Lions Club and won Lion of the Year from 2001 to 2002. He also served on the board of directors for the Connally Memorial Medical Center from 2000-11.
Troy and Janet have a son Trevor and a daughter Taylor. Trevor is graduating this year and will soon attend Commonwealth College of Funeral Service and follow in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps. Taylor will be a freshman in La Vernia High School next year. Troy feels like the families he and his staff serve are a part of his family and he attributes his success to them as well as the communities he serves. Troy and his staff will continue to serve his families with the utmost dignity and respect.
