Farms sustain hail damage
DEWEES -- While farmers and ranchers welcomed the much-needed rainfall across South Texas April 27, some farmers are assessing the damage caused by the severe storms that occurred around 11 p.m. that day.
According to Paul Yura of the National Weather Service, a microburst formed southwest of Floresville near U.S. 181 and S.H. 97, encompassing approximately one-third of Wilson County.
Wilson County Pct. 2 Commissioner Paul Pfeil reported May 3 that he visited the area April 28 after the storm.
The county infrastructure fared well, but farmers, among them the Boenings, sustained crop damage due to hail. Pfeil said the corn, milo, watermelon, and wheat crops all suffered severe damage.
Two barns, located off F.M. 541 and the C.R. 214 area, had their roofs blown off. Damage to the barns is estimated at between $20,000 and $30,000.
The Meyers family home, located off C.R. 214, sustained water damage when a corner portion of its roof was damaged in the storm, Pfeil said.
Unofficial rainfall reports in the area ranged from 2 inches plus hail at the Schneider’s Store in Dewees to more than 5 inches in Fairview.
