4A fails to muster quorum

FLORESVILLE -- Business to be addressed by the Floresville 4A Corp. has been delayed, following the board’s failure to muster a quorum for its April 29 meeting in which the corporation was to take action regarding fees at the Floresville Event Center. Also on the agenda were two presentations regarding an engineering study and a proposed lease for athletic facilities and a closed-session discussion of pending litigation related to the event center.

Due to the lack of a quorum, no business could be conducted. However, the two members of the corporation’s board in attendance listened to a presentation by Fidel Villegas of Baseball Country regarding a potential lease to his organization of the area behind the Floresville Event Center.

Villegas and his wife have formed and own Floresville Baseball Country, a company that includes several local tournament directors. The company plans to build four to six baseball fields to host tournaments and teams from all over South Texas. Included with the fields will be new concession stands and batting cage areas for utilization by area youth.

At the center of the proposed plan would be the Floresville Event Center, which would set Floresville apart from other venues, Villegas said.

“We plan to invest over $250,000 in this facility,” Villegas said. “We are prepared to implement an aggressive marketing campaign ... with several different leagues and coaches. We have got a lot of good plans to reach these outlying areas.”

Floresville Baseball Country plans to host tournaments at the proposed new fields for 10 months per year.

Villegas and his wife will return to the next 4A meeting to represent their proposal for consideration.

In attendance: board members Bill Gleeson and Paige Pullin.

Mr. O'Malley, stay out of this. We don't want or need your input. We almost got burned once, we do not want this to happen again. Let us handle it.

They built a nice complex on the southside of San Antonio for 300k. That didn't include lighting. Wish we knew for sure of the plan as in who maintains it, who pays for water usage, electric etc. Until we know all that I ... More ›

$250,000 divided by 4 = $62,500 per field. Quality fields, unlighted, may be able to be built for this. How about the cost of the concession stand, restrooms, utilities, sidewalks, stands and parking? Four first class lighted ... More ›

From what I understand, Sam and others, the cost to the city will be zero. The land will be leased from the 4a and this company will maintain their own property. The reason for the investment is so they may host, for ten months ... More ›

Bending over backwards for Wal-mart and McCoy's was stupid economically and I can provide the data again if necessary. As for the baseball fields, if they can be built them for $250k, how much is the annual upkeep costs and ... More ›

Seamus, Floresville under the old regime long had a neon sign above it that said "SUCKERS HERE," which was visible to every con artist in San Antonio. Maybe we're a bit cynical, but we've got good reasons to be. ... More ›

Then the potential builder of the 4 to 6 fields will not object to submitting detailed plans, cost estimates and payment and performance bonds, correct?

There's no way to substantiate that claim. Villegas is a former police officer and from what I hear, he isn't asking the city for a dime so no it's not the sports complex again. This is private industry doing what it's supposed ... More ›
