Miss La Vernia Scholarship Pageant
Thursday, May 9 La Vernia High School Auditorium
Each year, the La Vernia Lions Club sponsors a scholarship pageant for deserving young ladies in the area. Beyond talent and beauty, the Miss La Vernia Scholarship Pageant represents the ideals of the community. They hope to teach and encourage healthy living, self-confidence, creative accomplishment, community service, and the pursuit of scholastic achievement among young ladies. Their goal is to inspire, motivate, and lift young ladies to the realization that they are strong, independent, capable people who can accomplish anything.
The 2013 Miss La Vernia Scholarship Pageant will be held Thursday, May 9, at 7 p.m. in the La Vernia High School Auditorium at 225 Bluebonnet Road (F.M. 775). Doors will open at 6:15 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students, and free for preschoolers.
Meet the contestants:
Jordan, 17, is a junior at La Vernia High School. The daughter of Phillip Bailey and Jacqui Stuart is sponsored by SystemTools Software.
She participates in freshman and junior varsity basketball, and junior varsity and varsity cheerleading. Jordan is a member of the FFA Milk Quality and Products team and the La Vernia High School National Honor Society.
Her 4-H activities include being a member of Wood Valley 4-H Club, 4-H State Roundup, (third place Consumer Decision Making). She has shown animals in the Bluebonnet 4-H Prospect Show (meat goat), Wilson County Junior Livestock Show (meat goat and breeding nanny goat), La Vernia Junior Livestock Show (rabbits, meat goat, breeding nanny), and Star of Texas (meat goat).
Jordan’s community service includes Youth Connections (San Antonio Stock Show), Youth Day (San Antonio Stock Show), LV Senior Citizen Thanksgiving Meal, set up for Wilson County Stock Show, Adopt-a-Highway with Wood Valley 4-H, volunteer for HammerFest, volunteer at Wilson County District 10 4-H Rifle Shoot, assisted preparation of show animals for La Vernia Junior Livestock Show, and assisted La Vernia Junior High cheerleading tryouts.
La Vernia High School junior Britni, 16, is the daughter of Erik and Melissa Skifter of La Vernia and Archie and Lorie Stone of Fritch; her sponsors are Global Frontline Solutions, LLC, White Lightning Liquor, and Gaydos Construction, LLC.
Britni is the junior class secretary, a member of the Honeybears Dance Team, and was the runner-up for junior class duchess. Other activities include junior varsity softball (freshman, sophomore), Prom Committee, Bears Care (freshman), and Honeybear Camp Clinic.
She assisted with the La Vernia United Methodist Church fund-raiser at the 2012 La Vernia Stock Show, volunteered at local day cares, sang for church, was a Girl Scout for five years, helped with the Children’s Book Drive for Golden Plains Community Hospital, Fritch Little League concession stand, and has helped with Vacation Bible School.
Britni loves spending time with all of her family in La Vernia and Fritch. She loves to go camping, to the coast, and traveling. She is currently a party hostess at Green Acres Mini Golf & Games.
Haleigh Johnson, 16, is a sophomore at La Vernia High School. Her parents are Darren and Victoria Johnson. She is sponsored by Edward Jones Investments, Lane Talbert.
Haleigh is a member of the varsity tennis team, the Mighty Bear Band, and has been Homecoming duchess.
Her church activities include singing with the praise and worship team, also with the “Sake of 20” youth band, and with the worship team at a summer youth camp. She has participated as a recreational leader at a children’s summer camp, a music co-leader for Vacation Bible School, and volunteers with various children’s activities.
Haleigh has participated in a Student Life Mission Summer Camp, worked with Impact Missions Summer Project, led music and activities at See You At the Pole and Fields of Faith, the Texas Department of Highways Adopt-a-Highway Program, the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, and the JDRF walks. Additionally, she volunteers at the La Vernia Primary School with Math and Reading Nights, kindergarten registration, and is a greeter at various La Vernia Primary school student programs, volunteers at the Operation Christmas Child drop-off center, and volunteers at the La Vernia Food Pantry.
Kayla, 15, is a sophomore at La Vernia High School. The daughter of Daryl and Misty Kowalik is sponsored by Embroidery Plus.
Kayla has been a member of the La Vernia Honeybears for three years, and is the social officer and treasurer.
Her other activities include being a member of the La Vernia FFA, member of the 2011 Junior Chapter Conducting team, competed on the Senior Chapter Conducting team, a current member of the Poultry Judging team, member of County Line 4-H for four years, historian in 2010, treasurer in 2011, and second vice president in 2012. She has participated in the Youth Day Show at San Antonio Rodeo, has shown hogs for five years, won Reserve Grand Champion twice at the La Vernia Junior Livestock and Poultry show, and has also showed hogs in San Antonio and Houston.
Kayla’s community interests include holding the title of Miss Congeniality on the 2012 Miss La Vernia Court, helped with Adopt-a-Highway cleanup, La Vernia Food Pantry, Stuff the Bus, senior bingo, delivering Thanksgiving plates, the Lions Club Golf Tournament, Bluebonnet Fest Auction, La Vernia Parks Foundation Auction, the Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital Trail Ride Auction and Raffle, sold Bluebonnet Fest raffle tickets, assisted Santa at the La Vernia Christmas tree lighting, and Evening with Santa.
A La Vernia High School sophomore, Allison, 16, is the daughter of Rick and Donna Schrank and Walter “Gator” and Katie Bukowski; her sponsor is Center Point Station.
Allison’s FFA activities include being a member of La Vernia FFA, chapter president 2013-14, Alamo District officer 2013-14, chapter historian 2012-13, Alamo District voting delegate, Area VII voting delegate, Texas FFA Association voting delegate, Floriculture State Career Development event, Area Floriculture CDE, Tarleton State University Floriculture Invitational, Greenhand Creed Speaking, Senior Creed Speaking, and Job Interview Leadership Development Events, and Area VII Leadership Camp attendant. She has shown breeding beef heifers at San Antonio Livestock Exposition, Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, and Wilson County Junior Livestock Show.
Allison has been a volunteer with Wilson County Steer Validation, Wilson County Hog Validation, set up for Wilson County Stock Show, St. Ann’s Eucharistic Minister, St. Ann’s Food Pantry volunteer, Sophie Sparks Fun Run volunteer, Alex Pugh Walk volunteer, La Vernia Volleyball Club 16’s Lightning National Team, and Hermann Sons Youth Camp Counselor in Training program.
La Vernia High School sophomore Payton Stuart is the 16-year-old daughter of Chuck and Dawn Stuart. Her sponsor is Dawn Stuart, Realtor/associate with Fulmer Realty.
Payton’s school activities include National Junior Honor Society, freshman volleyball team, junior varsity volleyball team, junior varsity track and field, freshman class treasurer, and Gifted and Talented program.
Her community interests include Hermann Sons Youth Camp, volunteered at La Vernia Junior High volleyball tournaments, La Vernia Junior High club council, helped out at Hills Gym Volleyball Registration Day, Relay For Life participant at marathon benefiting Susan G. Komen, volunteered at La Vernia Junior High and High School track meets, Keep La Vernia Beautiful Clean-up Day, La Vernia Fun Run benefiting juvenile diabetes, and La Vernia Volleyball Club.
Ashton Knight, 16, is a junior at La Vernia High School. Her parents are Ken and Bernadette Knight. She is sponsored by Stars Cheer and Tumbling Academy.
Ashton’s activities include junior varsity cheerleader, varsity cheerleader, La Vernia Competitive Cheerleading Squad, National Honor Society member, sophomore class reporter, Visual Arts Scholastic event finalist, and participated in the “Shattered Dreams” program.
Her FFA activities include Junior Quiz team, Senior Quiz team, State Advancing Dairy Judging team, and Livestock Judging team. She has shown animals at La Vernia Junior Livestock Show (market rabbits, breeding rabbits, and market swine), Wilson County Stock Show (market and breeding rabbits), Star of Texas (market rabbits), and Houston Stock Show (market swine).
Ashton is a member of Stars Cheer and Tumbling Competition Cheerleading Squad, and International Champions at UCA Competition in Orlando, Fla.
Her community interests include being a counselor at Hermann Sons Youth Camp, lead lifeguard at Schlitterbahn Waterpark, Vacation Bible School teacher at Salem Sayers Baptist Church, Youth Day at San Antonio Stock Show, Boys & Girls Club volleyball assistant coach, setup and cleanup at La Vernia Junior Livestock Show, setup and cleanup for Wilson County Livestock Show, National Honor Society volunteer at HammerFest bike ride, Bluebonnet Parade participant, participated in Miss Teen Texas Pageant, and crowned Miss Teen Greater San Antonio.
