Lady Bears fall in extra innings

VICTORIA -- In a hard-fought game that took 10 innings to settle, the La Vernia Lady Bear softball team came up 1 run short, and dropped a 2-1 decision to El Campo for the area championship.

El Campo scored first in the bottom of the first inning, as a Lady Bear error coupled with a double to give La Vernia’s opponent the early lead. In the top of the fourth, however, La Vernia tied things up as Johnna Sturm cranked a lead-off homer to right field.

El Campo threatened to break the tie in the bottom of the sixth, but the Lady Bear defense retired the side. La Vernia then threatened in the top of the eighth, in the first of the “extra innings,” but El Campo got out of things with good defense.

In the bottom of the 10th inning, El Campo caught a break, as the first two batters drew walks. A couple of quick outs gave La Vernia a little breathing room, but then a sharply hit single to left field moved the runners into scoring position, and led to the game’s only other run, as El Campo claimed victory by the final score of 2-1.

Savannah Martinez led the Lady Bears at the plate with three hits. Alisen Saenz had two hits, and Sturm had the home run. Morgan Mikes pitched all 10 innings, striking out five batters, while walking three.

The Lady Bears end their season as the District 28-3A champs, and made a good showing against a tough post-season opponent. La Vernia will need to reload at some key positions next year, but will return a good group of athletes for the 2014 season.
