Falls City Beaverettes advance with win over Harper
Reagan Ehlers delivers a pitch during Falls City’s 12-4 win over Harper.
CONVERSE -- With a convincing 12-4 win over Harper last Friday night at Judson High School, the Falls City Beaverette softball team won an area championship, and punched its ticket to the regional quarterfinals.
After retiring the first three Harper batters of the night in the top of the first inning, the Beaverettes went to the plate in the bottom of the frame and quickly scored a pair of runs. Kayla Kotara laid down a bunt for a lead-off single, and Caitlin Jendrusch brought them both in with a home run over the left field fence.
The score stood at 2-0 until the top of the third inning when Harper put together a couple of singles and scored a run. Then, in the top of the fourth, a Falls City error and a couple of Harper hits, including a double to left, scored a few runs, and put Harper on top, 4-2.
Things remained the same until the bottom of the fifth inning when Falls City put together a 4-run effort. Addison Jaskinia got things started with a leadoff double, and Morgan Burns followed suit with a double of her own, scoring Jaskinia. Chloe Wilson then singled to score Burns, and Shaw Moy singled to advance Wilson. Jendrusch then cleared the bases with a triple into right field, and the Beaverettes were back on top, 6-4.
After a three-up, three-down defensive stand in the top of the sixth inning, the Beaverettes went back to work on offense, and scored another 6 runs. Reagan Ehlers reached on an error to start things off, and Alexis Sekula came in to run. Burns hit a single to advance Sekula, and Taylor Moy ripped a double to score Sekula and put Burns at third. Wilson singled to keep things going, and Kotara reached on an error by the left fielder. Shaw Moy singled to right field to score Taylor Moy and Wilson. Jendrusch then singled to score Wilson and Kotara. Ehlers doubled to left field, and Shaw Moy came in for Falls City’s 12th run of the game.
Harper put a pair of base runners on to start the seventh inning, but Ehlers caught a batter swinging for the first out. An error helped Harper load the bases, and it seemed as though Harper might have something going. Ehlers registered another strikeout to put the game an out away, and a popup to Taylor Moy was caught for the third out, giving the Beaverettes a 12-4 victory and an area championship.
Jendrusch led the team with three hits and 6 RBIs, Shaw Moy, Burns, and Wilson each had two hits. Ehlers threw a complete game for the win, racking up 10 strikeouts in the process. She gave up two walks and just 1 earned run.
The Beaverettes will now advance to the regional quarterfinals. Information regarding the team’s next playoff game will be posted to the Wilson County News website as it becomes available.
