DPS identifies crash victim

A woman is dead and two men seriously injured after this May 13 crash near Floresville, when a Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck collided head-on with a Jeep pickup near the intersection of F.M. 536 and F.M. 1303.

FLORESVILLE (updated 5/14/13) -- The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of an early afternoon accident on F.M. 536 west of Floresville, which claimed the life of one and sent two more to the hospital via AirLife.
Officials declared April Christine Bayer, 46, dead at the scene. She was the passenger in a gray Jeep pickup which was traveling southbound at approximately 1:30 p.m. May 13, which collided head-on with an older model red Chevrolet S-10 pickup.
The driver of the Jeep, identified as 48-year-old John Bayer of Floresville, and the driver of the Chevrolet, 53-year-old Charles Hewitt of Pleasanton, were transported to San Antonio hospitals via AirLife.
Members of the Floresville Volunteer Fire Department employed the use of the Jaws of Life to extract all three victims.
“All I can say right now is that vehicle one, which is the red Chevrolet, was traveling northbound on F.M. 536 and vehicle two was traveling southbound,” said DPS Sgt. J. Ryan Christian.
The Chevrolet, Christian said, veered into the southbound lane and struck the Jeep.
The investigation continues.
