Letter: No harm in background checks
Re: “What is ‘gun safety’? Do we really need it?” May 1
First of all, “gun safety” refers to the safe use of firearms and not the “personal protection” that many people think a gun provides. The editorial stated, “Gun safety is needed in our society today more than ever,” and he is correct. The days of being able to fire a rifle into the air and not worry about where the bullet will land are gone. We live in a much more populated society and unfortunately many gun owners have not migrated into the 21st century.
Every day we read about gun owners shooting themselves or a loved one. Just last week a 5-year-old shot his little sister. The week before, a 4-year-old shot the gun owner’s wife and the gun owner was a sheriff’s deputy who put the loaded gun on the bed where the 4-year-old could reach it. These shootings resulted because of the lack of gun safety, not just by untrained gun owners, but also in some cases, by a trained professional.
So, when you ask “gun safety, do we really need it?” the answer is “yes, more than ever.”
I don’t think anyone is against “being safe” as the writer asked, but I also don’t think that having more idiots with a gun is safer than less idiots with a gun. The ignorance of the folks who favor gun ownership when it comes to the actual protection that a firearm provides is staggering. After all, “feeling safe” because you have a gun and “being safe” are two different things. Most of those gun owners couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn in an actual gunfight. Most of those accidental discharges that resulted in the death of an innocent person, or even the gun owner, could have been avoided if there had not been a gun available to start with. I also know from experience that a two-week training course taught by “Bubba” does not make a gun owner an expert or a professional.
Maybe smaller magazines for automatic weapons are not the answer, but I certainly don’t see how background checks can hurt anyone. It is a step in the right direction. There is nothing wrong with legislation that seeks responsible gun ownership.
