Madalena Martinez Garcia, a lifelong resident of Poth, Texas, entered eternal rest Saturday, May 4, 2013, at 2:35 p.m. in her residence in Poth at the age of 90 years, 5 months, and 22 days. Madalena was born Nov. 12, 1922, in Wilson County, the daughter of Juan and Dolores Martinez.

She worked for many years at Colonial Baking Co. in San Antonio before working at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Floresville when it first opened. Madalena married Jose Garcia on Aug. 8, 1943. Jose, Madalena’s beloved husband of more than 37 years, preceded her in death on Oct. 5, 1980. Madalena was a social butterfly who loved attending all parties. She loved to sew and bake, and was a faithful newspaper reader. Madalena was a lifelong member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Poth.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Madalena is survived by her daughters, Julia Soto and Frank Quesada of Schertz and Bertha Guevara and husband Tony of Poth; her seven grandchildren, Jeffrey, Sarah, Steven, Agnes, Jesse, Johnny, and Jerry; her seven great-grandchildren; her one great-great-grandchild; her brother, Rosendo Martinez of Floresville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held on Monday, May 6, at 5 p.m. with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Poth.

A funeral Mass was celebrated on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Poth, officiated by the Rev. Grzegorz Szewczyk S.D.S.

Interment followed in the Blessed Sacrament Cemetery in Poth.

Serving as pallbearers were Jeffrey Soto, Jesse Soto, Jerry Soto, Jeremy Soto, Steven Guevara, and Johnny Guevara.
