AUSTIN -- Thanks to last week’s rain, La Vernia’s three-game series with La Grange became a one-game playoff. Unfortunately, the Bears came up short in extra innings, ending their playoff run and season.

After a scoreless first inning of play in Austin May 11, the Bears struck first in the bottom of the second inning. Rudy Mendoza and Justus Parker were the first two outs of the inning, but Colton Parrish got things going with a two-out double to right. Cody Cook came in to run, and La Vernia was hoping for a little rally. Colby Skelton got into an 0-2 count in a hurry, but then ripped a double to left, scoring Cook. Dylan Tuten went down for the third out, but the Bears were on top, 1-0.

La Grange scored a run in the top of the third to tie things up, but the Bears stormed back in the bottom of the inning to score 5. Christian Bruce drew a walk to get things started, and then moved over to second with a stolen base. Justin Trevino reached on an infield error, and Bruce moved over to third, putting runners at the corners with just one out. Colby Sims hit an infield single to score Bruce, and Trevino got over to second. Mendoza reached on another infield error, and La Vernia had the bases loaded with one out. Parker went down for the Bears’ second out of the inning, and Parrish came to the plate. Parrish looked at the first pitch for a ball, and then took the second pitch out of the stadium for a grand-slam home run.

The score stood at 6-1 in favor of La Vernia, but La Grange came back in the top of the fifth to score 5 runs of its own, tying the score at 6-all. The Bears regained the lead in the bottom of the inning.

Parker singled to right field to get things started in the bottom of the fifth, and eventually moved over to third on a La Grange error. Parker then came in to score on a passed ball, and La Vernia led 7-6.

La Grange refused to go down, though, and the team came right back in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 7-7. La Vernia had no answer in the bottom of the frame, and neither team scored in the seventh, sending the single-game playoff into extra innings.

La Grange jumped all over La Vernia in the top of the eighth inning, scoring 5 runs, including a three-shot homer to centerfield. The Bears went three-up, three-down to end the eighth, ending their season with a disappointing loss.

Parrish led the team with two hits, including a double and home run for 4 RBIs. Skelton had a double for the Bears, and Bruce tallied a pair of stolen bases.

The Bears had another great season, ending the year with a record of 21 wins and 6 losses. The Bears finished second in District 28-3A, and won a bi-district title with the victory over Wimberley.
