KENEDY -- Troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Highway Patrol continue their investigation of a multi-vehicle crash just after midnight May 20 that claimed the lives of four oil- field workers.
DPS Cpl. Javier Reyes said that notification of next-of-kin was pending for one of the men, who was just 18 years old. The other three were identified as 24-year-old Samuel Norwood Jackson of Dallas, 25-year-old Alexander Smalling of Glenwood Springs, Colo., and 24-year-old Joseph Solis of Arcadia, Fla. The four were returning to their oil rig after an evening at a bar in Kenedy. Traveling with them, but riding a motorcycle, was 28-year-old Phillip Batres of Eagle Pass. He sustained multiple injuries and was transported to the Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital in Kenedy.
Jackson, who was driving a 2012 Honda Civic, was traveling westbound on S.H. 72 at approximately 12:20 a.m., when his vehicle struck the rear of a tractor trailer, Reyes said. Batres avoided striking the truck by laying his motorcycle down and sliding underneath.
Solis has ties to the La Vernia area, Reyes said.
