About politics and other things

It could have been wishful thinking when Sen. Mitch McConnell called for “full transparency and cooperation” from the White House over the IRS scandal.

He asked for “no stonewalling, no more incomplete answers, no more misleading responses, no holding back witnesses, no matter how senior their current or former positions.”

Unfortunately, there has been nothing but stonewalling, misleading responses, and total lack of cooperation from the administration over recent allegations of wrongdoing.

There was the Sept. 11 murder of four Americans in Benghazi, Libya, the IRS mishandling of conservative nonprofit groups’ applications, and now the apparent invasion of privacy of Associated Press reporters. At best, the responses from the White House to all of these have been, shall we say, “vague”?

Everyone from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to the president himself has been quick with their non-answers. Clinton is the one who asked in 1974 concerning Watergate, “What did the president know and when did he know it?”

In 2013, her response to the question about “what did he know and when did he know it” -- only months after the Benghazi murders -- was, “What difference, at this point, does it make?” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney continued with the stonewalling: “Benghazi happened a long time ago.” Actually it was less than a year ago, and four Americans were killed by terrorists, while the administration blamed an anti-Muslim video. But like everything from Fast and Furious (which also led to American as well as many Mexican deaths), to the IRS scandals, the administration simply tries to wish them away.

The responses, even now, from the president and his cohorts continue to be:

“I don’t know.”

“I’m not sure.”

“It’s not my fault.”

“I wasn’t there.”

“I heard about it when you did.”

And this has been working for the president, at least until now. It remains to be seen what the fallout from these events will be, especially now that the press has become a target.

The number of non-answers from this administration leaves one to wonder who is running this country. Is it someone behind the scenes whom we do not know? Is it a country without a leader being run like a rudderless ship?

Is it ignorance? Incompetence? Or something more sinister?

From asking the president where he was when the Benghazi, Libya, terrorists attacked our consulate to what Attorney General Eric Holder knew about the FBI probe into leaks to the press, no one accuses the administration of lying, because they only give vague and elusive answers; they are “not sure.”

Eric Holder is on video testifying before the House Judiciary Committee asking for respect: “I respect the oversight role that Congress plays. This isn’t always a pleasant experience; it’s one that I recognize that you go through as an executive branch officer. The one thing I’ve tried to do is always be respectful of the people who’ve asked me questions. I don’t frankly think I’ve always been treated with a great deal of respect, and it’s not even a personal thing. If you don’t like me, that’s one thing, but I am the Attorney General of the United States.” (My emphasis.)

Holder said that he “recused himself” last year from an investigation of national security leaks, but he could not say when. Perhaps if he could be a bit more honest and forthright with Congress and the American people, he might get some respect. Until then, he is getting what he deserves.

Obama is either 1) a liar <my vote> or 2) the most incompetent President ever. If he truly had no clue about the IRS (even though his staff knew last year) or the spying on the Press (even though his close friend Holder ... More ›
