1940-2013

Eugene “Gene” A. Stanush, 73, of Adkins, Texas, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on Monday, May 13, 2013, after battling cancer. Gene was born on March 27, 1940, to Theodore and Clara Tudyk Stanush.

He was a lifelong resident of Adkins, and a longtime member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in La Vernia. Gene also was a member of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in St. Hedwig, where he regularly attended. The Stanush family has been in Adkins for many generations, and the family still resides on the original homestead properties, continuing the farming and ranching traditions of their ancestors. Gene was a member of the American Legion No. 539, Hermann Sons Lodge No. 174, and the CPS Energy Retirees Association, and an active board member of the Wilson County Crime Stoppers, where he helped the organization draft the school safety program. Upon graduation from La Vernia High School in 1957, Gene enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served his final two years in Tripoli, Libya. He began his career at CPS Energy in 1961 as a lineman helper and advanced to various positions during his 36 years of service. He retired in 1998 as director of application development and support. He remained an avid sports fan especially of the La Vernia Bears and Texas Aggies and enjoyed cheering for them from the comfort of his home. Gene enjoyed ranching, hunting, fishing, woodworking, and spending time with his grandchildren.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Nurses In Touch who cared for Gene in his final weeks.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, George Stanush; sister Helen Stanush Grams; and brother-in-law Alex Grams.

He is survived by his loving wife of almost 50 years, Gladys Ibrom Stanush; son Kevin Stanush and wife Shirley; daughter Debbie Bennett and husband Jayson; grandchildren Tim, Chris, and Alyssa Stanush and Colton, Brayden, and Ava Grace Bennett; sister Alice Stanush Pilarczyk; brother-in-law Leon Pilarczyk; sister-in-law Ida Stanush Schneider; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many loving friends.

Visitation was held on Thursday, May 16, from 4-9 p.m. with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. in the Finch Funeral Chapel in La Vernia.

A funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday at 10 a.m. in the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in St. Hedwig, with the Rev. Bill Zadora officiating.

Interment followed in the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Cemetery in St. Hedwig.

Serving as pallbearers were Mark Ibrom, Eric Ibrom, Aaron Ibrom, Doug Johnston, Alan Friesenhahn, Ryan Ramzinski, and Ralph Gerhardt.
