Doris Lucille (Eckel) Swierc
On Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 12, 2013, Doris Lucille (Eckel) Swierc entered eternal rest in Pleasanton, Texas, at the age of 83 years, 3 months, and 3 days after suffering several medical setbacks since December 2009. Born Feb. 9, 1930, she was the only child of William “Bill” Charles and Bertha (Ferguson) Eckel of Poth, where she spent her childhood years.
In 1946, she graduated as valedictorian of her class at Poth High School at the age of 16, at a time students only attended 11 years of high school. She attended Trinity College (now Trinity University) in San Antonio for a brief time, returning home following a serious illness. Doris met and married Sam Swierc of Falls City on Nov. 23, 1948. They completed his active duty in the U.S. Army Air Corps at Tinker Field in Oklahoma. Following their return to Falls City, their marriage was blessed with three children: Sandra, Sammy, and Steven. Doris raised these children while helping her husband run what would eventually be known as Sam’s Town & Country Store in Falls City, a true “Mom and Pop” style grocery store. Doris was extremely proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. While the grocery store was still operating, pictures of the family would be proudly showcased on the meat scale near the meat department of the store for all to see.
Along with being deeply involved in assisting her husband Sam in the grocery store, Doris was a longtime active member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, where she sang in the church choir for many years. For nearly 20 years, she sold meal tickets at the annual church picnic, loving the contact with all the hundreds of people who came to eat the incredible meal served each year. Membership in the Catholic Daughters, the Sultana de Bejar, and the Poth VFW Women’s Auxiliary were also very important community activities for Doris. She worked with the Falls City Economic Development Council and served as the secretary of the Falls City Housing Authority, keeping records and managing correspondence at a time when there were no computers to prepare and store correspondence. One thing that she made sure to coordinate was generous food contributions from the store to dozens of family funeral luncheons through the years. She also helped in the family catering business as the food designer for various stylish food buffets that Sam’s Town & Country Catering served for nearly 25 years. Over the years, Doris was a very active and supportive fan of the Falls City Beaver and Beaverette teams!
While Doris was not known as a woman who stood out as a leader in the community, she was one who found her best niche being “the woman behind the man” as Sam Swierc’s wife. She was his lifelong love, his best friend, his confidante, and his business partner for all of their marriage and even operated the store alone for nearly five years after Sam’s passing in 1998.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents; and her beloved husband of nearly 50 years, Sam S. Swierc.
She is survived by her children, Sandra (Swierc) Poth and husband Fred of Pleasanton, Sammy Swierc and wife Peggy (Bivins) of Kemp, and Steven Swierc and wife Theresa (Polasek) of Falls City; Doris was known as “Nanny” to eight beautiful grandchildren, Lindsay (Poth) Lanham and husband Greg of Fort Worth, Leissner F. “Lex” Poth and wife Kristi Kilgore of Simpsonville, S.C., Samuel Coleman Swierc of Tyler, Lauren Nicole “Nikki” Swierc Pena and husband Jacob of San Antonio, Wilson Jerret Swierc of Austin, Luke Swierc of San Marcos, and twins Joshua and Zachary Swierc of Falls City; and precious great-grandchildren, Katelyn Rae and Leissner F. “Levi” Poth of Simpsonville, S.C., and Jacob “Jake” Pena of San Antonio. Cousins on Doris’s family side, Jeanette Ramey and Marilyn Zolkoski, both of Poth, and Mary Rose Jaeckle, Mary Ann Vetter, and Yvonne Anderson, all of San Antonio, were very special to her. Kathy Levinson of Louisville, Ky., and John Ferguson of San Antonio survive on her mother’s side of the family. Besides her immediate family, Doris was “Aunt Doris” to scores of nieces and nephews on the Swierc side of the family.
Visitation was held on Wednesday, May 15, from 4-6:30 p.m. with a rosary at 6:30 p.m. in the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Falls City. An additional visitation was held on Thursday from 9-10 a.m.
A funeral Mass of Christian burial was held on Thursday at 10 a.m. in the church.
Interment followed in the Holy Trinity Catholic Church Cemetery in Falls City.
Serving as pallbearers were Doris’ six grandsons, Lex Poth, Coleman Swierc, Jerret Swierc, Luke Swierc, Zach Swierc, and Josh Swierc.
Honorary pallbearers were Robert Kolodziej, Sam Lyssy, Connie Lyssy, Julia Szalwinski, Jackie Grier, and son-in-law Fred Poth.
