Fabian Alois Pawelek, 83, of Wildhorse, Nev., passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2013, following a brief illness. He was born March 10, 1930, at the family farm in Falls City, Texas, the son of Alois and Amelia Skloss Pawelek.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict on the USS LSMR 403 as a gunner’s mate. After his service, Fabian met Betty Ann Jauer of Hobson, Texas, in Three Rivers. The couple married Feb. 5, 1956. He subsequently worked as a sheetrocker in San Antonio. He began his mining career at a uranium mill at Sesquahanna Western in Falls City. He moved with his family to Carlin, Nev., in September 1966 and began work with Carlin Gold Mining Co. Fabian retired in November 1991 to his current home in Wildhorse.

Fabian was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially with his children and grandchildren. He was a passionate domino player and was an exceptional family man. He was a member of the Carlin American Legion, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and Carlin Lions Club, and was a volunteer firefighter for many years.

Everyone who met Fabian loved him and he will be dearly missed by all, his family said.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Edmund Pawelek, Claude Pawelek, and Alois Pawelek Jr.: and his in-laws, Harry and Mary Jauer.

Fabian is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Ann Pawelek of Wildhorse, Nev.; his brothers, Webb, Archie, Ben, Chester, and Lambert; and his sister, Elsie. He is also survived by his children, Margaret Sue Jones and husband Richard, Mary Beth Nutting and husband Lonnie, Michael Pawelek and wife Patty, Marty Pawelek, Milton Pawelek and wife Debbie, Marvin Pawelek and wife Heather, Diana Pawelek, and Yvonne Overholser and husband Wayne; his grandchildren, Sarah and husband Ty, Payton and wife Nicole, Amanda and husband Chris, Shay, Nathan, Jacob, Anthony, Phara, Logan, Seth, Brooklyn, Sarah and husband Lester, Daniel, Katie, and Lauryn; and his great-grandchildren, Lexi, Emma, Ty, Marley, Wiley, Charlize, and Maci. Fabian is also survived by numerous relatives in South Texas.

A funeral Mass was held Monday, May 20, at 10 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Carlin, Nev.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Carlin American Legion Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 763, Carlin, NV 89822; or the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 4002018, Des Moines, IA 50340-2018.
