1934-2013

Gerald Odom Witt, 78, of Elmendorf, Texas, passed away Saturday, May 25, 2013, in the Mission Trail Hospital in San Antonio. Gerald was born Oct. 29, 1934, in Groverton, the son of Lemmie J. and Susie (Mullins) Witt.

Gerald graduated from Groverton High School and then joined the U.S. Air Force as a mechanic in the motor pool and served for 10 years.

Gerald married Shirley Bonsall on Aug. 7, 1964, in Clovis, N.M. Gerald liked to tinker with anything that had a motor, and he could fix anything. When he was younger, Gerald liked to shoot some pool or go fishing. He enjoyed taking care of his vegetable garden and giving the vegetables to family and friends. It has been said that Gerald was quite the storyteller, and the more he told the story, the more embellished and outrageous it became.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 40 years, Shirley Witt; and three brothers, Lemmie Witt Jr., Clifford Witt, and Weaver Witt.

Gerald is survived by five daughters, Yvonne Cartwright and husband Les of Elmendorf, Becky McCook and husband Andy of Las Vegas, Nev., Diane Lohman and husband Doyle of Deer Park, Gerri Ann Griego of Silver City, N.M., and Dorothy Shoman and husband Michael of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two sisters, SaraNell Lange and Letisha Witt; one brother, Glen Witt; one sister-in-law, Jeannette Roe; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation was held on Friday, May 31, at 9 a.m., with family visitation on Saturday from 12:30-2 p.m. in the Buffington Funeral Home Chapel in Shiner.

A funeral service was held on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. James Lee Kitchen of Lufkin officiating.

Interment followed in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Yoakum.
