Students shine in academics, athletics: year in review
by Cody Soto
Another year has come and gone here at Poth Independent School District, and what a school year it has been! Not only have we lived up to our expectations, but we’ve put our area on the map.
In the athletic department, student athletes wore our school colors and name in more than 48 district contests, and once again they’ve prevailed as champions. The Pirette basketball team advanced the farthest this year and ended their season in the state tournament for the fourth year in a row. The Pirette volleyball team was successful once again by playing in the regional championship game with only one returning senior from the previous state championship team.
Both the Pirate football and basketball teams snatched up bi-district championship titles while the Pirette track and field team claimed the district title in Poth for the ninth year in a row. Powerlifter Marisol Palacios earned the silver medal at the state contest while high jumper Alyssa Kallies soared to a gold finish at the state track meet in May. We also had regional qualifiers Thomas Rodriguez and Dylan Sefcik in cross country as well as Megan Kersh in golf. There were numerous other regional qualifiers in all the individual sports who represented our school well.
However, not only did the athletes succeed, but also several clubs and organizations at each of the campuses. The Elementary Odyssey team is the first team to qualify for the World finals by placing second at the state tournament this past April. Both junior high Odyssey teams advanced to state as well. Also, both elementary and junior high campuses stomped their competition by taking the Academic UIL district titles in Poth and Schulenburg, respectively.
The high school experienced their share of success this year too. The Academic UIL team advanced 13 students to regional competition and qualified three students for the state meet earlier this week. They finished as district runner-up behind Karnes City.
Band received a second division rating in marching competition and earned a first division rating in concert and sight-reading in the spring. They will advance four individuals to the state solo and ensemble competition this month. They also qualified two upperclassmen for ATSSB area contest in the fall.
FFA had its share of success as well. They advanced a dairy team and a farm business management team to the state competition, and they competed like champs. Finally, FCCLA advanced two state participants in the chapter’s STAR events, and for the first time since sponsor Gina Falcon’s reign, a Poth FCCLA member will be competing at the National championships in July.
Can’t you see? It doesn’t matter what these students do. They will find success wherever they go. Whether you are on the field, on the court, or in the classrooms, as long as you work hard, success will find you with time. However, if you want it faster, you will have to seek it yourself.
Congratulations, Poth, on a successful 2012-13 school year!
